Manix is so good

I do respect Spyderco and love many of its knives, but I'm no fan boy. I've posted criticisms of some of its lesser ideas IMHO. (Emphasis on the Humble.)

I used to EDC a Mililtary, which is clearly an awesome design. But when Spyderco discontinued the Manix and then announced the Manix II, which is no Manix I, I reassessed my Manix. I had discounted it as an EDC because it was too big. But then I realized that my objection was the sharp jimping, which combined with the size of the Manix made accessing my pocket a painful experience. Plus, my early Manix had chipping on the S30V steel. That chipping went away with a full reprofiling. Then I smoothed the jimping a bit with a Dremel.

All of a sudden, my Manix was the best knive I've ever used.

The big, wide blade on FFG is easy to get very, very sharp. It loves stropping. And the knife is tough as nails. It carries easily in my pocket. I have or have had a number of truly excellent knives, but the Manix just does it for me. I've been trying to get a back-up Manix in case I lose my EDC Manix, and just found a FG sprint Manix. Now I'm happy. (Look out, Jill!)

Spyderco: You done good with the Manix. I love this knife.

I suppose the Manix is too big -- probably too wide -- for the average person. Maybe sales were not good. But I remember it being received extremely well on BladeForums. I wish Spyderco would keep it going at least with an occasional sprint run for AFIs.

I agree I love the manix-A chinook 1 comes pretty close though;)

I've heard nothing but good things about the Chinook, but I could never get into the blade shape and so have never tried it. Plus I love a FFG. And look at the beefier lock pivot on the Manix, same size as the blade pivot.

If I were to ask for one improvement to the Manix it would be for a beefier blade pivot.

The chinook 3 has the bigger pin an screw construction, but imo the blade isn't as cool (but is flat grind) . mine is a chinook 1

Hey Twindog now that you have a new FG Manix on the way. You should send out your EDC Manix to Tom Krein:thumbup:

Not to discount Tom Krein's magic, but the Manix is such a good cutter and so easy to sharpen that I think I'm good with the Manix just as it is.

The Chinook 3 is a fantastic knife. Identical build as the manix with a ffg. Also has a beefier tip.

The Chinook is commonly brought up as being as tough -- almost identical -- as the Manix. Not disputing that, but what is it about the upswept design of the Chinook blade that makes it equal to or better than the leaf-blade Manix?

I am with you on that. I would assume that that kind of Bowie-like upswept tip is actually weaker than the drop-point leaf design.

It's mainly for the back-cut. It's only for martial purposes that it's better than the manix. That is all.

The Chinook was designed first and foremost as a self defense knife just like the Pikal. That up sweep is an integral part of that design. The design also works well for everyday cutting chores. I guess, in a sense, it's like two knives in one.

A chinook III is a Pansy knife compared to a Chinook I.Correct me if I am wrong but a regular Chinook has a bigger pivot than a Manix or a Chinook 3.I have all three. The thickness of the tip between the first and third generation Chinooks are almost Identical.I would think you would break the tip off a Manix before a Chinook.:)

For some reason I just can't get beyond the Chinook 3's overall shape. I've danced around buying it on several occasions but the aesthetics always turn me back. I can't put my finger on why though.

I just don't liken the Chinook as an EDC and as far as knives go, apart from my FB's when outdoors for camp usage, they are all about EDC for me. Having a usable knife on hand in my pocket that does many things well.
