Manix Question:

I have a question about the blade opening smoothness of a Manix. Can it be brownie popped like any liner/AXIS lock? Some may complain that it is hard on a knife, but it can take it.

Seems like a blade that big would be easy to pop, but I am not sure with the lockback. Obviously I have yet to handle one.

Thanks.

Well, I can easily "pop" my Chinook I; my Manix is not as easy or as sure (but it's also not as "broken-in, yet).

Just my experience.

just received my Manix today and it's an awesome folder!
the opening is smoother than any spyderco lockback I got so far (no blade play at all), I can do an inertia opening without problem.

what's a brownie pop? :)

I've got a manix on my list of knives to buy and am also wondering what a brownie pop is... not to mention wishing this were w & c. My mind is in gutter mode today I guess, I've come up with a couple crude rude explanations already!

Senate: does your manix have the phosphor bronze washers? or whatever they are calling those spacers nowadays.

I wonder if it means holding the handle and swinging it really hard and forcing the blade to swing open? If so I can do that with mine but its really hard because its pretty new and I haven't used it that much so its not broken in enough to do that with any accuracy.

yep I see bronze when I look with a flashlight.

I'd like to add that the inertia opening works with normal grip and reverse grip as well with this one and mine is perfectly new... really great!

i too don't know what a brownie pop is. i suppose it's similar to going in through the back door & ending up with chili on the hotdog? :D

senate - are you talking about an inertia opening without even touching the blade, or are you talking about a sot of "assisted" inertia opening with a little bit of thumb/spyderhole contact? i would imagine the nonassisted way would be tough to do with the manix.

it works both ways, assisted with the middle finger and totally nonassisted too! with a blade of that size and that weight, it's all good! :)

yo senate, when i order my manix, it's likely not gonna be directly from spyderco. i'm gonna have them make sure it's got the bronze washers; i understand that the initial run does not use PB. how should i instruct them to look at the knife before sending it - ie, where/from what angle are the bronze washers visible via flashlight? thanks.

mmmbrownies!

Senate, did you take down your opening videos you had? I remember you did a bunch of opening methods....

try to look at the blade pivot from the top of the knife when it's closed. they aren't very visible but the blade and the liners being white, it's easy to spot some bronze with the flashlight :)
I got mine from Bestknives, great service.

nope I think they're still on the server, I'll try to make some new ones with the great Manix!!! :)

I am not sure I can discuss the entire sequence of the Brownie Pop opening method here on this forum. It sounds cheesy, but there was a moderator on the blade discussion forum (Brownie) that had a method of openings knives that was cool. He would discuss this privately, and asked us not to post/share publicly the method. /cheese off

Basically, this works best on liner/mono locks and BM AXIS folders.

1. Hold the knife parallel to the ground with the blade facing down.

2. Pull the knife straight up briskly. You have to pop it. Imagine the blade standing still and you are pulling the handle up off of it. You never have to touch the blade at all during this method.

3. The knife comes up, and the blade just "pops" out. I can get my BM 732D2SBT out of my pocket and opened as fast as my auto.

I was wondering if the Manix can do this. My Chinese does this with ease and I'm sure the Military is a breeze too.

Thanks
Robb

if anyone wants to post video of this, feel free.

anyone know if the manix that new graham is currently shipping has the PB washers or the nylon ones?

Can anyone show me a link to somewhere Sal, or Joyce say the Manix has been/is being switched from nylon to PB washers. I can find where they changed the ones used in the ParaMilitary, can't say I've ever seen anything like that for the Manix. Mine, which must be early production as it sports a collector number, is extremely smooth. Since the change on the Para was made for a very specific reason that does not apply to the Manix, I have to wonder whether if this is fact or fantasy.

As for the original question, I don't think there's a Spyderco front lock made that will open easily and reliably using any kinetic opening method except the "spydie drop" where you grip the blade and flick the handle open. My Manix opens real easy that way. It will open via the Brownie drop, or via a regular wrist flick while holding it by the handle, but only with absurdly large, flailing motions, and even then only perhaps two-thirds of the time. Milie, on the other hand, is the closest thing to a gravity knife I've ever handled. I'd be afraid to carry mine in public.

my manix opens just fine with a flick of my wrist (not pushing it open with my thumb or whatnot).

I made two crappy video with my Ixus 500 to show how this beast can be flicked open really easily and to convince the last non-believers.
not a good news for our canadian brothers... :)
my Manix is 1 day old, mint out of the box, no militec, no adjusting the pivot, and no bladeplay!

inertia normal grip

inertia reverse grip

join the church! the knife is awesome! :D
