Manix Question

I have just purchased a new Spyderco Manix C95 PE and it seems a bit stiff. I had read a review in Blade magazine that stated that the Manix opened and closed so smoothly that it can easily be done with one hand. Opening the knife with one hand is no problem but when I press on the lock bar the blade does not drop on its own. Is the stiffness just a mater of the knife needing to be broken in more or will I probably need to adjust the pivot bolt? In the locked position the blade has no play in it at all either up and down or to the side (which I’m happy about). I’m very new to Spyderco with my only other one being the Native that I bought at Walmart. Spyderco’s idea of putting their Native out there at a low price so that people will give them a try really worked on me. The only reason I went to Walmart was to check out the Native after reading good things about it. Of course when it was time to buy the Manix I went back to the wonderful NGK.

Thank you for any input.

I bought a Manix new about a year ago and it took some use before the blade fell on it's own when I released the lock. Only a few days if I remember correctly.

Mine does the same. I use the back of the Blade against my thigh when the lock is depressed to close it one handed. As big as this blade is I'm not sure I would want the blade to fall freely when unlocked. ;)

I own the manix also and can tell you that if the pivot is tightened to where it is meant to be the blade should not close on its own under it own weight. The manix was not designed to be a one hand closer like many axis locks, but meant to be a heavy duty folder that you can rely on. If you want a big folder that you can one hand close check into the BM 610 Rukus which is also a great knife.

Mine doesn't fall either. I don't mind it and neither do i think that it was designed to do so.
I always "flip" my knives closed when i close them.

My Manix is buttery smooth. The blade easily closes itself from gravity. I don't remember if it did it brand new though.

Well whether it takes a little wrist to close it or not, all Spyderco lockbacks (mid locks) are designed to be closed one handed. That's why the release is where it is and why Spyderco shows how to close one of their midlocks one-handed. There used to be diagrams on how to do it at the beginning of their catalogues, not sure if they still include that.

I’m in no way complaining about the Manix, I just curious if the tightness/stiffness was normal on a new Manix. As I said I have the opening with one hand down pat, it’s the closing with one hand that a little dicey. I wouldn’t want to make a mistake trying to close such a sharp blade.

This is very rare (for me), but today my wife said “let me see that one you just bought.” After opening and closing it (very delicately with two hands) for a couple minutes she said “I think that that I like this one the most of any that you’ve bought so far and it feels very sturdy.” :D

You gotta love it when even the wife likes your knife.
