Manix S110V vs. Maxamet

I have both, although I like Maxamet a whole lot mainly because it's got stone wash blade finish so for an user that hides a lot of scratches and it's quite tough but is it worth 50% more than the S110V? Answer is no. I haven't put it through any hard work but did cut down 10 mid size Home Depot moving boxes and still mighty sharp and slice printing paper, stropped it with only 3 light passes on leather with 9u paste and it shaves. Did the same with S110V, same result... but this is by no means HARD use but for EDC that factory edge will last quite a long time. For the money thou, I would take S110V because it's stainless and you can eat your orange with it

S110V is stainless
Maxamet is high carbon steel

what are you going to use them for?

depends what you want. i have a maxamet mule and a manix2 s110v i like them both. i dont carry them much.

some say the S110v is hard for them to shapen, i havent needed to sharpen either yet.

i havent cut up food with the maxamet mule yet, but if you keep it oiled with mineral oil or fluid film and clean it off after use, it should resist patina, corrosion or rust. tho you cannot take it apart so be careful to not get water inside for the manix2 lightweight version. they say the native5 maxamet version can be disassembly, but i havent got one yet.

I do not have Maxamet yet. But I am using S110V Native for more than three years. Hundreds of boxes closed with fiber reinforced tape were broken down using this knife. In my opinion S110V has plenty of wear resistance and not many people needs even this. Also it is stainless. So I would take S110V over any carbon. Recently my work changed and I do not need to brake down many boxes as a routine and I started to carry Ti Fluted N5. I think that even S35VN has plenty of wear resistance for most of users.

Based on my use of both so far, maxamet out performs s110v in every category except corrosion resistance, which is at the bottom of my blade attribute list.

Which one and WHY

Both and BECAUSE! Of course.

Seriously, I have both, and I carry the Maxamet more. Both hold their edge very well in my use, but I find the Maxamet easier to sharpen. Besides, I also carry a Military in S110V, making the Manix a bit redundant.

OK Jack,

Let go back to the earth, to us regular users. Is Maxamet staining like M4? Worse? Less? IIRC you are using DMT stones for sharpening. Is Maxamet sharpens twice faster? I am using S110V N5. Touch-up takes 2-3 minutes. Reprofiling takes couples hours on WE, but my 100 are shot. Currently in a month I am putting less miles on my knives, than you daily.
And frankly later I am using Ti Fluted N5 more than Forum N5. Remember that knife? Gift form the friend :D

Yep, I remember that Native. As far as staining, my Maxamet stains about like my M-4, which is to say mostly it doesn't. I haven't really put it to the test, though, since most of my use involves abrasive stuff rather than corrosive stuff. Yes, I've been using diamond hones for the last thirty or so years. Sharpening an S110V Manix2 LW and a Maxamet M2 LW in the same session, the Maxamet seemed to take less time and take a more aggressive edge, but not half the time. The difference would probably be more like 15 to 20% less.

iirc s110v is better with a toothy edge rather than mirror polished. but that does look nice.

It has a toothy 1000 grit micro on it at 16 degrees, just 3 feather light passes at the apex. It bites ;)

Which one and WHY

You have to answer that.

People buy it because-
they want it
it's different
they want to test it and see for themselves
they do a lot of cutting and really need the improved performance

How many of us can really tell that it has improved performance over S110V, which is certainly very good?
