Manix Sprints in question

Is anyone worried or thought about this:

A lot of the Manix 2 sprints were flat grind s30v blades with different colored g10 (blue & orange models) that people were/are selling for 200+

The new 2014 gen 2 Manix 2 are now that same flat grind s30v steel. All you have to do is make textured handles for it and it looks identical to the sprints.

Do you think those sprints will plummet in value due to the fact that they can now be easily recreated?

Hard to say exactly. I had one of the gen 2's and had no problem selling it on the exchange so maybe the opposite is a factor, the sprints will allow the gen 2 to retain value. On the other hand the sprints still have their originality going for them and there's always a collector looking for originals and that dictates value.

The new ones have solid liners, so unless you drill them they will be easy to distinguish from the sprints. I sold my orange one, but since I have an orange Domino coming the loss is very easy to cope with ;)

Good observation on your part and an interesting question. I agree with comments by Barman1 and NoFair. Knuts really into Spyderco shouldn't have an issue. Others however might be fooled if someone switched out the scales.

The colored scales don't interest me it is the skeletonized liners in the sprints I like. I wouldn't mind a FFG S30V with black G10 if I could get the sprint liners...

Also, aside from handle color variations, there were other steels used. One had CTS-XHP, another M4, and another had BG-42, but I'm not sure if that one was a sprint.

I never understood how a different colored handle made the knife twice as expensive.

Because the different handle colour usually comes along with other differences, such as blade steel, grind or other features. But you already knew that.

Only for collectors because they are rare. Often sprints have exotic steels or other things making them more expensive for Spyderco to make. The sprints are often sold at normal prices, but have inflated prices on the secondary market.

No
I can't think of anything that is a collectible that a reproduction caused an original real Mccoy to plummet in value...A sprint is a limited run and less likely to be run ever again.I believe an exclusive may be commissioned again and the request may of may not ever happen. This is my understanding and I may stand to be corrected. The value may fluctuate over time, but no I have never seen them plummet. Are we talking about plummeting from the release price or plummeting from the price people are willing to pay to acquire a long out of production limited knife?

I agree - I don't think there's going to be any impact on the value of the sprints.

From my perspective the value of the sprints will go down. I'm not interested in the exclusivity or handle variations in sprint runs. All I care about is steel.

I would pay market value for an m390 military with carbon fiber scales, but if spyderco started making m390 standard on the g10 militaries for half the price I wouldn't touch a sprint.

This might not matter with the manix since there are enough die hard collectors out there and s30v is so common now anyway.

but since I have an orange Domino coming the loss is very easy to cope with ;)

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I would REALLY appreciate a PM regarding where to order this version of the Domino...

The OP is making it for me :D If you look at some of his started threads you can see some of his work.

Yeah, I meant sprints where the only difference is the scale's color. I have 4 Manix 2s and an XL myself, the only sprint I bought is the EDC forums glow in the dark sprint. It's the only sprint I would buy with the same steel, other than that I would only be interested in different steels.

I myself lusted after a FFG Manix Sprint of some type. Blade steel or scale color really didn't matter much. I checked here and there for a good deal. I never found one.

Now the the new second generation FFG Manix is in my pocket, my lust has been slaked.
