If given the choice between the two heavy folders, what would you choose?

Which lock is stronger and which knife is tougher?

The steel is the same.

If you had to pick one of them for strength which would it be?

My test on the Skirmish:

Well after about 2 minutes the results of push cutting a battery cable and as can be shown, it still shaves hair from my arm.

Who can top that?

As much as I like Benchmade, I'd go with the Manix simply because the Skirmish is just too frickin' huge. I've had the Skirmish in hand, cash to buy it in my pocket and I passed. I have fixed blade knives that are smaller. But if you are looking for a huge folding blade, go for it. It has a really strong lock.

Don't know about the Manix, but all Spyderco products are excellent quality. The BM 630 is BIG, STRONG and very well made, you get a LOT of knife for the money, I mean a LOT of knife.

I'm with ras, the same thing happened to me. The blade size of the Skirmish is about 1/3 inch longer than the Manix. The Manix fits my hand like a dream but the Skirmish looks and feels huge.

I am partial to Spyderco over Benchmade generally speaking, and the Manix is a great knife. I don't really like the looks of the Skirmish -- too "decorated". But the Skirmish is a heavy duty monster of a knife, if it isn't too big for your hand. I found it extremely comfortable to hold. VERY tough choice. Buy one of each and tell us how they compare in action. :)

I have both knives & I prefer the Manix. Excellent handle & thumb ramp & very easy to open & close. To me, it's a perfect size.
Nothing against the Benchmade, it's just as some have said.....maybe a hair too big.

Just my 2 cents :D

I agree, I do not carry the Skirmish except when I go into the woods. I would go with the Manix for an EDC and the Skirmish when you really mean business. I am sure the Manix could cut through a batter cable also, at least I would put money on it.

I think the Skirmish is awesome-looking, but I could never handle a knife that big! Any possibility that they will come out with a mini-Skirmish? That would be cool.

Manix - 4 carry positions. Lefty friendly.

Skirmish - 1 carry position. Not lefty friendly.

I have a Manix. I love it. Perfect grip. Easy to carry. Excellent lockup.

Held a Skirmish. Too big. Too bulky in the pocket. Not comfortable in my hand.

Hey Ed. Do you feel like walking to Edison tomorrow? :p :D ;)

To be honest, I wish BM had a 3/4 version of the 630; I'd buy the smaller version also, as it'd be easier to carry.

PS: The only thing I actually dislike in the 630 is the flimsy clip.

I had the chance to play with a Manix this afternoon, and would choose it over the Skirmish. The handle of the Manix is more comfortable to me, and I prefer flat ground blades. Both are top notch pieces though. They are probably similiar in terms of strength.

Been carrying the Manix for a week now.

1) Doesn't puil the waist of my nylon shorts down - so not too heavy for EDC for me.

2) Great for food prep - I deliberately used instead of my Global chefs knife for making a curry last night (heaps of vege chopping) and it performed fine - a good slicer.

3) Has a wierd x-factor in design. The most tactile, aesthetically pleasing knife I have handled. My house has been echoing with the shhhtick....tack sound of me opening and closing it all week.

My beloved long suffering Military must be getting very worried indeed.

I vote for the Manix. I saw the 630 in person and it's looks didn't sit well with me. Now if they made a smaller version of the 630 I might be interested.

The Manix is also very large, but it looks and feels more like a knife should. :)

I put a review of the Skirmish over in the review forum. I just don't see it as all that big - the handle on an AFCK is longer than the handle of a Skirmish.

Open, though... it looks pretty big...

The Manix has the stronger lock, no question. I have yet to try both iut, though I will be in the next couple of months.
