Manix XL S30v blade rusting?!?!

I'm working on the farm and I used my knife to cut something. I drop it in the soil, no biggie, dust it off, close it, put it in my pocket. Next day, the blade has heavy surface rust...

The soil wasn't wet at all, probably a heavy salt layer on the top, but I thought S30v wouldn't rust as quickly as it did.

I took a bit of elbow grease and some polish to remove the rust.

Anyone here had their S30v rust on them?

S30v isn't rustproof :)

I've had spotting on some of my blades in S30v

Yes I have, along with other steels. H1 is the only one that won't in Spyderco knives. I forgot the name but there is some liquid you can put on the blade to help with rust.

Fertilizer or something on the soil? It's likely more than just salt as S30V is one of the more corrosion resistant cutlery steels. The first thing you should do is wash the blade off in hot, soapy water.

Dry it off and then apply another treatment of whatever you use for lube/corrosion protection. This should insure that whatever it was that is corrosive enough to do that to S30V isn't still there doing it's work unseen. I agree with tuff glide and use it myself. Make sure the blade is clean of everything before applying the tuff glide and letting it sit. There are plenty of other products available but this is one of the more common ones used by BF members.

Good luck.

Although I cleaned of my blade as soon as I saw the rust, wiped it down with alcohol, then coated it in a flourinated lubricant, the blade is pitted at the surface rust location. damn....

S30V is pretty darn rust resistant based on my experiences. I've seen 8crMOV13 rust pretty readily just from being in a sweaty pocket, and I've also seen 420 do the same. I've carted around a S30V knife for months now with no issue. I wipe it off about once a week if I remember, and I've seen no issue. I suspect, as others have mentioned, that there was something extra corrosive in that soil....

Pics?? I've had some spot stains on s30v due to neglect, (and it came off with some metal polish and minimal effort) but never 'heavy surface rust' ..
Even superblue took months to actually pit the blade.. overnight doesn't sound right.

There are some of these superalloy stainless steels that have higher than normal carbon content which would make them vulnerable to oxidation. I had a similar experience with one of my Spyderco ZDP-189 blades cutting up tomatoes and I forgot to rinse it off and the next morning it was as though someone did an acid sketch treatment on it  >> I even had to send it back to Spyderco it was so bad.

I agree with Mastiff that you probably encountered some type of fertilizer or other farm chemical in the soil. Since I had that one incident with my ZDP Caly Jr. I make it a point to make sure that all my blades are properly cleaned and have protective coatings on them. And yes I do that to my H-1 Spyders as well.

Corrosion is a very unpredictable act of nature with many factors involved>> and prevention truly is worth the effort and will save you a lot of grief in the long run.

I recommend the Flitz line of polishes and metal treatments to remedy your problem. Also SEntry Solutions has some great products for prevention.

I had a 8Cr13MoV Kershaw get all rusty from carrying it inside the waistband. I cleaned off the rust and then started using Eezox. They sell different bottles for gun and knife applications but I'm pretty sure it's all the same stuff just different sizes because you don't need that much for knives. After I applied it the Kershaw never rusted again and I apply it to all my knives. I carry a regular S30V PM2 in the waistband and have for the past year and it has never developed any rust at all and neither have any of my knives that I rotate through. I've seen several people test it against a range of other rust inhibitors and it seems to come out near the top each time.
