Manix2 CTS washers missing?

I just received my Manix 2 CTS in the mail and i was overjoyed to have it in my hands after missing the smurf manix 2, however i noticed that mine has a lot of side-to-side blade play, and seems to only have washers on one side. I don't want to take the knife apart, but it also seems that there are two washers on that one side.

Is this normal for Manix2's or did i get a lemon? :(

edit: after looking at it under the magnifying glass, there's only one washer.

both washers are on the same side?

i wouldn't say you got a lemon, but it isnt supposed to be that way.

NO !!! its not normal , are you sure you have 2 washers on one side ??

Odd. From the Dept. of That Glass is Half Full: at least if that's true you have all the parts you need to put it together correctly??? :D ;)

If you are not happy send it back to the dealer or send it to spyderco.

Something not right there- I'd send it back.
Similar thing happend with my FFG delica (G-10); it had 2 washers, 1 on each side but one of them wasnt actually around the piviot, it was just stuck between the tang and the liner. It's an easy fix for a Delica, but on the Manix 2- I'd send it back for sure.

Sorry- didn't see that there was only one washer. Spyderco C.S. will take care of you.

If he had 2 washers why would you 'send it back for sure'? It's not hard to pull the blade out and put the washers where they need to go. It is just like any other knife except it has a bushing that adds 1 extra part otherwise it is like most other knives.

I would just call up Spyderco and tell them that you got a knife and it is missing a washer and if they can send you a new one. Tell them it is brand new and you noticed the action was weird and you don't want to spend the $5 or $10 to send it in and be without it for 3 weeks. It is made in Golden so they should have parts and it will only cost a stamp to send it. Can't hurt to ask.

my only concern with taking it apart myself, if it were me, is the lanyard tube would loosen, then i'd have bigger problems.

Let them fix it and get it right.

I was giving my own personal advice. "I" would have sent it back; I have taken apart lock back folders before and would not want to void my warranty on a new an expenicive knife. (I recall Sal saying in an older thread that dispite what some people think- taking apart Spyderco's will void the warranty)

To me it would not be worth the risk to take apart a knife/ lock system that I have very little experince with.

My advice on this forum is worth exactly what the OP paid for it :p
Just trying to give my own 2 cents

Unlike the washers on some models, the ones on the Manix 2 are thick enough that it would be impossible for anyone who isn't legally blind to miss them if they are there. If one is missing, the knife was purchased new from a dealer, and you're in the USA, the best course of action is to send it back to Spyderco to be fixed. If it was traded for or purchased from a private party, then I'd suggest "undoing" the deal.

The Manix 2 is not a lock back folder. It is a caged ball lock. You also don't have to take apart the whole knife just to get the blade and washers out? No need to even think about the lanyard tube just taking the blade out?

I also don't know where the claim that the warranty is voided if you take the knife apart comes from. No where does Spyderco say this as that is a Benchmade thing.

The CTS is the new sprint run that just came out. I guess it is possible to have already been traded but I would think he just got it from the retailer. I would still call Spyderco CS and see if they can send you a washer.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that, because the Manix 2's pivot is bushed, it cannot just be slid out of the frame like those of most other models. That, being fatter in the middle, it is trapped between the liners unless the knife is either fully disassembled or, at the very least, spread apart quite a bit at the front. Either, to me, would risk causing the known issue with the lanyard tube.

Here's ssome photos that show what I'm referring to: http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39069

Also, FWIW, my understanding of Spyderco's warranty is that DAMAGE CAUSE BY improper dissassembly voids the warranty, but disassembly in and of itself does not.

You are right it has been awhile since I have taken mine apart and it is more complicated than pulling the blade out. It can still be done but if you aren't comfortable taking apart knives then send it back. :foot::foot:

It's not that bad as you just twist the liners and scales on the tube and you can get everything apart. I personally don't think it is hard at all to take it apart but I'm used to taking apart and putting back together mechanical things.

The one thing I would not do is send it back to the retailer/vendor. I'd be concerned that I might never get a replacement. I know that in theory that shouldn't happen, but we all know that in real life, Murphy rules. Personally, I'd look into fixing it myself, but if I didn't want to do that I'd send it to Spyderco.

It would take less than 5 minutes to disassemble the knife and move one of the washers to the correct side.

If you're not the 'tinkering' type, send it to Spyderco. Someone on their end will disassemble the knife move one of the washers to the correct side.

I encourage you to take apart the knife.... you learn a lot about the locking mechanism, construction, and proper care of your tools when you 'do it yourself.' If this were a lockback knife I'd say just send it in (those are a PITA to put back together :)).

Ok, I'll just add that i just checked my Manix 2 CTS and it too only has washers on one side. Checked with my loupe and that's all i see on one side. there are 2 washers, and there is significant blade play when not locked. the blade will hit the liner in one direction and not the other. Guess that explains why the blade isn't centered when closed.

I think that the reflection off the liner makes the single washer appear to be two washers. I just looked at my regular Manix 2 and this sprint run and I see a washer on each side for both of the knives.
