Here is the short history of Mnjushree Sword from shop manager Rajesh.

Manjushree is the Buddhist god of divine wisdom. When depicted, he carries a sword of wisdom and light in his right hand and, in his left, he a lotus blossom. Belief has it that worshiping Manjushree will increase people's likelihood of developing wisdom, better memories and improved intelligence.

According to legends, Manjushree is the founder of Nepalese civilization and the creator of Kathmandu Valley. One day, he intuited that there was a big blue flame on a lotus in a huge lake in Nepal. He went there to try and offer worship at the flame, but couldn't get close enough because of the vast expanse of water. So, he used his Sword to cut through the southern walls of the hills (called Chobhar hills), so the water in the lake drained in that direction. The dry valley that he carved out is now referred to as the Kathmandu valley.

Thank you,
Rajesh

Very instructive, thanks Yangdu.

Feel free to post more of these Nepal stories, I like them :)

Thanks for sharing that, Yangdu.

Manjushree is one of the dieties I feel an affinity with. Usually depicted with a sword (to cut through ignorance) and a book of divine wisdom. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manjusri .

Years ago when HI was sourcing from Shop 1 Bill helped me get this special 20" Sirupati made for my daughter. She got it for her 10th birthday.

It has silver fittings, but what you can't see in the picture is the custom engraving on the blade. It has her name on one side, and a dragon, but one side has Manjushree holding his flaming sword.

Some time back, I was thinking about knives and why I like them. I used to have a list of brands and styles in my Bladeforums user profile under "favorite knife." For the past few years it has said "the sword that cuts ignorance and delusion."

That is Manjushree's sword.

First post in a long time, think I need me a Falcatta and a Manjushree sword!

Great to see the usual suspects still here. Hope everyone is well.

Billy

Thank you for the very cool info. It's always nice to learn about other cultures beyond their Epcot veneer.
