Had to be pretty self-critical last week and admitted my own sheaths were pretty similar to Master-Shiv's. I'm no ninja master and can't get by on spirit points, so figured I'd have to settle for working harder and making better sheaths. Looked at some tutorials and settled down to try and improve my leather work. Spent a few hours tooling, smoothing, grooving, marking stitch holes, drilling, grooving, burnishing, welting, etc etc and was close to completion on an "almost" good looking sheath for a tyee-sized filet knife I built for a friend. Set it down on the bench for a second, turned around, and as the franco canadians say "There it was......gone!"
My faithful companion - logo dog - namesake - had a few scraps of leather in her mouth and was taunting me - prancing around with the remains of my work.
As a rule, no animals in the shop - when I'm working power tools, heat/spark, or chemical. Guess I'll have to add animal hides.
To keep it on topic, anyone else have the family pet destroy hours of hard work in a matter of seconds? I've heard of blacksmith cats spending hours in front of the forge - my old barn cat won't come near the shop - where do you guys keep your animals when you're working?

Our cat comes down while I'm working but is in another part of the basement staring out a window. He doesn't get in my way just keeps me company.

I had to keep all my ray skin stored inside a drawer otherwise the dogs would not waste a second to eat it, and not once I left a knife on my desk to prepare the resin soaking setup and when I come back I found one of them munching on its handle.
This not to mention the shark skin sample that disappeared seconds after I openes its box...

This is funny, I have a lab and a rotti who have destroyed horn, antler, bone and welding gloves. They look at the open door of the shop like a smorgasboard of chew toys  Anything that might hit the floor is fair play. I'm still working on being trained not to leave things lay where they can get to them!

haha My cat will hang around the shop if it's to cold out so she mouse's around in the shop
grinding and other racket don't bother her..she don't like my Leather room a lot though, I think the Coyote and fox on the shelf bugs her just a tad.. :D

she came face to face with something a few months ago and lost about 10% of the old licker  and I lost $200.00 out of the old wallet getting her fixed up :grumpy:
she's a good hunter, IG tree rats, birds (the wrong kind)
now if I can get her to bring in some Game birds and Rabbits I'll forgive her the $200.00 :D

$200? what are cat hides worth? My dogs love it in the shop, but They are too roudy to have underfoot while I am working. Kinda like having IG drunk in a china shop with his favorite hammer. Sorry, fellas. I just hadda do it!

Dan, for that much investment, your cat should do duty as a guard cat!

you know how those pussys are John they just lay aroung unless you poke them a few time to get them up and going then they just lay around again ;) :)

One of the barn cats decided it liked having someone pet it all the time, and got to be pretty insistant about it. It wandered into the shop one day while I was grinding and started rubbing on my legs.
After awhile when it still hadn't got my attention it jumped and sank its claws into my thigh and hung there (lucky I wasn't grindin naked like some of you guys  ;) )
Startled, I jumped into the severely burned heat treat dance and the cat went flying :o
I gave him to the neighbors a few days later :D

Good grief, I bet you almost s**t yourself when that happened  Our cat is not one that does that. He just likes to be in the same room. Sometimes if you try to pet him and he isn't in the mood, he get up and leave. Not a lap cat at all.

Honestly I.G., where did you learn manners, stealing food right out of peoples hands. My dogs atleast wait until you aren't holding it any more.

Merry my shop cat is completely fearless (read oblivious) when it comes to power tools. I had to keep shooing him out from under my press while making damascus last fall as i was afraid the falling slag would set him on fire.
This winter I was grinding and aparently not paying enough ettention to him and he jumped onto my shoulder. That was a close one, but no injuries so far. Hes good company in the shop.
