Just read about the Mantis MT-7 in Tactical Knives and like what I see. Anyone own one? Complaints, opinions, etc... on it? Thanks.

They are made in china what more do you need to know. and the owner of the company is a douche of epic proportions

Every Mantis knife I've held has been good quality. That said, they are sketchy. The owner imports them from overseas bypassing CoO regulations and tries to pass them off as US made as legally as he can get away with. I've heard Taiwan mentioned, but it's not been verified. China is a big possibility. The markup is absurd. It's also been noted that the higher end steels probably aren't what they're claimed to be.

Mantis has a bad rep on this forum anyway after the owner offered his "militia" free knives to flood us with spam.

My opinion is if you like it, buy it, but keep in mind you'll be dealing with one of the shadiest companies in the business.

Gentlemen, this is the General Knife Discussion forum. There are more appropriate forums for complaints about provenance or company policy, like, Whine & Cheese.

Here, the original poster asked about a knife. You haven't got one of them? You don't know anything about it? Zip your lip and let someone who knows what he's talking about , contribute.

(Biginboca, good point! :) )

imho they are an entry level knife not quite as good in the F&F and design dept as CRKT, i dont own one but have handled a couple, i suppose for the $$ they arent bad but i would prefer a spyderco byrd myself if i was looking for a cheap knife, or if i wanted to spend a bit more a spydie delica or endura is a lot better knife imho.

i really didnt care for the designs myself but hey chocolate & vanilla right?

but if it "grabs" ya i suppose ya could do worse, of course ya could also do better lol.

I have the MTF-4Ti Chaos Folder. Its my current EDC. I am "Across the Pond" right now.. so I like decent tools for the jobs at hand.

I alternate between a RAT RC-3 or a Strider DB on my Pistol Belt. I also have a Benchmade Nimvaris on my Kit. (Examples of variety and different uses for different needs)

I use the "Tool" for the task at hand. The Chaos folder is .25 thick and S30V. I like blades for jobs... not for "Fan Boy" indulgence. I thought I would give it a try and I cant take it out of my pocket. I was EDC'ing a Benchmade Auto Stryker.. (Good Knife).. but the Chaos.. has tackled a TON of hard tasks.

I will say this.. if the MT-7 is anything close to the Chaos Folder.. you should be satisfied for what it is.

Chinese, Taiwan, USA, BFE... whatever. I will go with what I want and like. So should you. Have fun researching on the "Errornet" and good luck with your purchase.. no matter what it is.

thats us the "errornet" lol.

a lot of folks dont like mantis because the owner of the company is kinda squirelly but again if ya can get past that and the (imho anyway) odd designs they are "ok" but imho they have quite a ways to go to equal a BM or spyderco, imho even the more expensive ones.

IIRC i looked on the mantis website and they had some knives which were in the hundreds of dollars, i would certainly pass on those.

but again, imho.

I actually like several of the knives in the line. Some are goofy or weird. But I have used one of his karambits for about 2 years as a box cutter and utility knife, and it has held up well enough. I also used one of the "Seymour" knives to dress a big texas hog last summer. It worked well enough. And that was after I beat the hell out of it for a review on here. For entry level knives, most of his lower cost ones are a decent value. I haven't tried any of the higher level ones, so I don't know about them.

Yes, the owner really flubbed it with his free knife for spam idea. But it is a small company, and he was like 27 or something at the time. He gets a bit... enthusiastic at times. But he has given me great customer service over the past few years. I have had knives show up at my office within 12 hours of me ordering them online. Who else can say that? And he will take all kinds of input on new ideas that customers want to see.

Now, as for the folding prybar, I have not tried that one yet. But I do have one of the fixed blade pry bars, and it is built like a tank. If the folding one is built along the smae lines, it should be a good beater knife that will take anything that you throw at it. If it breaks, send it back to him with a letter saying how it broke. The odds are good that if it was a normal knife kind of task that broke it, not using it as a lynch pin on an 18 wheeler or something, he'll replace it. They have lifetime guarantees, and he has stood behind all of his stuff so far for me.

-Mb (who really isn't a fanboy, nor does he carry a mantis as an edc. but he does feel that the guy has been beat up enough for one bad marketing decision)
