My first look at the Mantra 2 was two weeks ago when I received the 2016 Spyderco catalogue in the mail. The flipper section definitely caught my eye, in particular the Mantra 2. Lo and behold, later that week the Mantra 2 popped up for sale on BladeHQ, I quickly placed me order, and afterward the Mantra 2 was listed Out of Stock. What a score. The last one in stock was mine. I eagerly checked the tracking updates and eventually the package arrived at my doorstep. I didn't waste any time getting the knife out of the package and once I had it in my hands, I'm sad to say, I definitely had mixed feelings.

Foremost, I guess I hadn't paid close enough attention to the specs because I had expected a larger knife. That's obviously my fault, and could probably be chalked up to the fact that most of the knives I've purchased over the past year have been bigger folders. Additionally, I tend to prefer thick blade stocks, more akin to the stout blade profile of the Techno, so the slim and slender blade of the Mantra 2 was certainly a contrast to my normal preference. Lastly, the detent was weak out of the box. Devoid of any other opening mechanism, I would expect this knife to flip like a dream. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. The weak detent, coupled with a fairly tight pivot out of the box, made for a less than optimal flipping action.

At this point I was quite underwhelmed with the Mantra 2, mostly due to my personal expectations. Nevertheless, I found it pretty disappointing, so I listed the knife on the Exchange, looking to recoup my funds.

Long story short, the knife didn't sell and sat on my desk. That is, it sat on my desk until yesterday. My most used work-knife had gotten fairly dull recently so on my way out the door I grabbed the Mantra 2. My original disappointment faded away and my initial impressions were proved wrong after I put the Mantra 2 to use. At work the Mantra 2 performed superbly, cutting through a huge amount of masking tape, metallic barrier paper, adhesive stencil paper, transfer film, and cardboard. The addition of some weapons grade lubricating oil to the pivot seemed to help quite a bit with the smoothness of the flipping action, although I'd still prefer a stronger detent.

Thanks for the great pics and first impressions!

I don't think the blade shape of the 2 is for me. The 1 looks much more functional and much more aesthetically pleasing to my tastes. It's like they took a Tenacious, gave it a flipper, a Ti framelock and ground the blade from M4! Will definitely keep my eye on that one and will pick one up if I ever get the chance.

Anyone else have similar issues with detent? I wonder if Mantra will have same issues since it has a slightly wider blade. Mine should arrive within the next few days, but will be disappointed if the flipper doesn't perform well without wrist action

The flipping action on mine seemed to improve slightly after lubricating it/getting used to the necessary technique. But I'd like to know as well if other folks' Mantras have the same soft detent.

Thanks for the pics, but all I could look at was the F-15.

It's actually an F/A-18F. Not one of those chAirforce jets :p

Easy there on the chairforce.:D

A few years ago I heard my son say that when he was thinking of joining the military.

I said "which service are you thinking about--air force?" and he said "yeah, right, dad, it's the Marines, not the chair force." lol

When I was a kid, I traded my friend a slingshot for the service manual to the F-14, which he had gotten from his aunt, and was probably classified at the time. It was about 1,000 pages and to this day I could still tell you about the radar system. These fighter jets are fantastic and anyone who gets to work with them is fortunate. Oh, and thank you for your service.

I received my Mantra 2 today and loved it immediately. The knife flips nicely for me and the edge is thin, two of my major concerns weren't an issue. I am able to use the small spydie hole as nail nick to open the blade, that was also a nice surprise and will probably be handy for when I want to be more discreet. I also like how the sharpened edge goes all the way back to the flipper giving this knife almost as much edge length as my BM 943.

The handle is very comfortable and the fit and finish is perfect. I can't find any flaws to complain about. I actually like this knife more than my GB2, considering that I will carry and use it more often. I also think that the Mantra offers excellent value for what they are going for.

One thing that does worry me though is that the more I carry this knife the more susceptible it will be to rust, and the area in the blade slot for the internal stop pin worries me the most.
