Hey I'm new to knife making.
I've made a few knives now, but I haven't been able to finish any cause I've been using my works tools and shop. But I wanna get a forge started up at my place. I have an idea of where to put it and where to build a shop for working in, the only issue is I have no way of running power to it. Using a grinder and belt sander is clearly the way to go but it won't be an option.
Are there any better ways then just using files or wet stones to make an edge on a blank?
Thanks

Get a good generator for the smithy and shop. That will allow lights, power tools, a blown forge, etc.

You can start with power tools like an angle grinder and a small belt sander and work up to drill press and 2X72 grinder.

You could always go primitive with your manufacture. Knives have been made for a long time without power tools. Also look at battery driven tools. Stock up on battery cells and charge at the homestead :) My real answer would be to bite the bullet and get power to where you want to work. Make the shop you want. Not just the shop you can afford right now.

It may not be the best choice but I worked in my shop that didn’t have electric for almost 8 months by running a 75’ extension cord that had 3 outlets. I finally ran electric out to it and now have a 100amp sub panel but the extension cord worked to get me started in the detached workshop. Make sure you get a heavy gauge that is rated for interior/exterior and find a outlet that’s atleast 20-30 amps to plug into. Otherwise like Stacy said a generator works well or a very course 14” bastard file or battery powered angle grinder.

Thanks guys. Good advice, I was definitely feeling going primative but I don't know if I could do that forever.
