Ok, Im coming to the pro's again for some good advice. You all havent let me down yet. I'm planning on buying a couple knives as Christmas gifts for some of my employees.

These are my considerations to keep in mind;
-I need to keep the price point below $75.00 for each knife
-Good quality light to medium duty blade.
-Small to medium sized folder with poket clip.
-I like the unique look of the Rainbow Leek, but any other suggestions on a "cool looking" design?

Many thanks,

WD

If they are knife people then the gadget factor of the Leek is great. If they are not really knife people I would stay away from the assisted openers and go with something from the Spyderco range like Delica's. :)

Another unique design which meets your criteria - A Spyderco Salsa - well within your price range.

I think you're looking for something "gift friendly" to the mass. So I'd stay away from utilitarian looking Zytel handled knives, or scarey looking tactical folders.

Personally, I'm a bit biased right now since I'm shopping around for the old-fashioned Stockman style pocket knives. So I would look at several Case knives. Why? It's politically correct (not scarey for the sheeple), they have a nostalgia factor, they're art knives (e.g. nice mother of pearl handles) to some extent and have a collectible factor, and some come in a gift box (e.g. like Spyderco -- Case has a commemorative 9/11 knife).

For low priced folders, how about CRKT Ed Halligan K.I.S.S. knives? They double as a money clip, and they have some that are gold plated; very appropriatee as a gift.

No offense to Full Tang, but I have found that the CRKT KISS line to be rather dangerous, i.e., these knives will open in your pocket or on your keychain. This happened to me on multiple occasions with different knives from this series.

The Salsa is a nice knife, but rather bulky. It does have a unique appearance.

The Leek is pretty sexy and has a nice clip.

Probably not the right knife, but in this range, the Spyderco Harpy is an incredible value if you like hawkbill designs.

No offense taken, Architect. I totally agree with you that they are not the safest knives to use as I once cut my hand on a dislodged KISS while fumbling for my wallet. I've made several posts over the years regarding this.

However, they do make good presents as a novelty knife and as a gift since they really look unique, come in the gold plated version for gifts, a brand name, can be engraved, and not a very offensive or scarey looking knife.

I would say you just have to becareful, and use the KISS within its limitations. I still occasionally carry mine and have had no accidents after I learned my lesson the first time.

would have to say that the Spyderco Harpy may no be the most people friendly knife... after all, Hannibal Lector did use it to kill a few people in "Hannibal".

the Rainbow Leek is definately cool, but the first thing my girlfriend said when she saw an assisted opener was "that's scary", and she carries a knife with her.. two actually now, so she is not new to them.

Spyderco Crickets are useful knives, and look very benign, as are the Meerkat's... Cute one might even say.

Boker Michael Walker 2076 with Cocobolo Handles and stainless bolsters are nice.. about $60-70US a peice and they come in a really nice stainless Boker presentation case.

Boker's other knives like the Top-Lock are also good. Good quality, and sheeply friendly.

I would opt for the stainless plain-edge Spyderco Delica or Native. The Camillus EDC in 154cm is also a great choice. You might even go way off the beaten path and buy them all SOG (Deluxe) Pocket PowerPliers, as those are a pretty handy multi-tool.

You know, I bought a Spyderco Meercat a couple of weeks ago, and I am impressed. This little thing cuts like the dickens, and its comfortable to hold. Also, I play around with the handle/lock. If you hold it open it flips real well .
Hey whats a knife for anyway !!

If the knives are for non-knife people I suggest a green handled Case in one of their tin boxes. Most knife companies sell a limited edition gift boxed knife around Christmas.A useable, functional momento/keepsake/remembrance.

The CRKT Ryan Model Seven should be sufficient. It looks awesome, CRKT is known for good quality and this knife is very inexpensive. The materials used are not great, but I find them to be OK. Zytel scales feel a bit, well..."cheap" and AUS-6 doesn´t hold an edge for a long time, but it´s very easy to resharpen.

I guess I'll step up and mention Buck. Below your price range you could get 110s, 112s, Dukes, or Princes. All are nice, sturdy and reliable knives and can be used by a variety of people; you could give one type to the suits and the other type to the people who sometimes get dirt under their nails. (They could get over the lack of a clip.:))

you can never go wrong with a swiss army knife

but your looking for a single blade folder, a lot of the lower end spydercos are well in you budget, the kershaw vapors are great for the 20 bucks they cost, the benchmade griptilians are good too.

I'll second the Kershaw Vapor. What I know about knives wouldn't fill out a smallish post-it note, but I like the heck out of mine.

I carry it over a Benchmade Stryker at work, just because it seems to do everything I need it to and if I lose it it can be replaced with a $20 bill.

I think the Gerber SL 3.25 is one of th ebest folders around in this price range. While chinese made, it has an ATS-34 blade, carbon fiber scales and a slender 3.25" blade that is not too intimidating. To people unfamiliar with William Henry and the like, the CF makes the knife look like it's much more expensive than it really is. it has a reversable clip too if memory serves me.

A Leatherman Juice would also work well in this price range and be very useful to most.

One of my staple gifts is a Leatherman Micra in a gift set with either a Mag Solitaire or an Inova microlight. These gift sets always go over well, especially with non knife folks because of the general "neat" factor of both the tiny LED light and the Micra's overall usefullness.

What they need now is a gift set with a Pulse and a Photon III. That would be cool.
