Ok, so I'm in a little dillema. I am either going to buy one of these groups of knives:

ZT 0200ST - Combo Edge
BENCHMADE SKIRMISH BLACK BLADE-630BK
SOG NAVY SEAL 2000

Around 400 for those three above.

or

ZT 0200ST - Combo Edge
EMERSON CQC13 COMBAT BOWIE BLACK COMBO EDGE
SOG NAVY SEAL 2000

Around 400~ for those 3 above.

or save up for one of these custom made knives by Pat Crawford:

http://www.crawfordknives.com/picture_library/p9-21triumphdamascus8.jpg - $950

Any ideas?

The high end production pieces make a lot of customs look pretty questionable . I would stay with prodo. unless you really know what you want .

i agree with cdf, but most customs really are worth their money, i usually go with production though

I woud purchase a different blade instead of the Sog Seal and go with a ZT 0300, 0301, or 0302. Also, I would upgrade the Emerson CQC-13 to a framelock CQC-12 instead.

I agree that custom are great but I just buy knives whenever I can whether they are production or custom. The problem I have with buying higher end custom knives is that once I receive them I think about their beauty and how much I paid for them then place them in my safe and never use them.

Of course that is what collecting is all about. I tend to use my production blades much more often than I do my customs.

I'm mainly getting a folder and a fixed for SD purposes (I live in a neighborhood where crime is on the rise and I will need this)

So would a CQC-12 be a very good choice of knife for my purposes? Also should I get it combo edged or plain edged?

And besides the SOG SEAL I want a very good fixed blade to attach to my leg.

Also what are your ideas on the ZT 0200ST - Combo Edge?

Obviously, you want to look at the legalities of your area before you pack a FB to your leg.

Having said that, I think it comes down to whether you'd use or carry a $750+ knife. If not, then you're probably better off getting the 3 knives you listed.

I believe the recommendation of the CQC12 over the 13, is because it's a frame-lock. They tend to be stronger, more reliable locking mechanisms, than a liner-lock. That's not to say the liner-lock wouldn't work, it would.

If you've handled any of the knives you've listed, get the ones that felt the best to you. Keep in mind that A/Os are nice & quick & ZTs are one of the better production A/Os (If you're getting the ZT 0300 or maybe even a 0400). PE is better in terms of sheer cutting, but a CE can be handy on an EDC (& you can "usually" get by on not sharpening it as often, but they're more difficult to sharpen). By that I mean a knife you'd use anytime, not just SD. If you're going to carry 3 knives on you, then one of the folders can be a CE & the other a PE, of course.

As for the SOG 2000, nothing's wrong with it, & a 7" blade is ideal for hitting organs consistently (Again, is it legal for you to carry a large FB?).

Another Emerson to consider, are the HD series (The Ti frame-lock ones). They're very good knives & tanto blades are great stabbing (Penetration) blade shapes. I'm not a fan of the chisel grind, though, but if it's solely for SD, it's not going to matter.

Wow, I wrote too much. Hope that helps.

I kinda gave up on the idea of a dedicated SD knife, since most anyone who gets killed by a knife is done in by kitchen cutlery. I wouldn't go looking to spend $750+ just to lose it to the authorities if I so happen to survive the encounter.

I take it you can't carry a pistol? Do you have pepper spray?
