Manufacture's fault with Peter Herbst?

Hi guys,

I just bought a Peter Herbst C53P from my local knife store in Singapore. After fiddling with it for a couple of days i.e. opening and closing etc, I notice that when in closed position that edge of the blade actually touches the cylinder for the lanyard to pass through. The contact point where the edge is is actually visible because it looks like the edge is not smooth. The cylinder thingy also has a mark where the blade touches it when closed. Is this considered a manufactuer's fault? None of my other folders (Microtech, Bokers, Benchmade) have this problem. This is my first Spyderco knife. Hope someone can advise me.

Thanks

The edge should not touch the lanyard pipe. Since these are all hand sharpened, my guess is that it was not sharpened quite enough when made.

You can send it back for repair (a long way), you can sharpen it and see if that does it, or ???

Hi Sal,

I'm actually quite new with collecting knives and I'm not too good at sharpening. If I were to do so, I think the knife would be worth about $1 in about 5 minutes time. I think the one I have is the one with the ATS-55 blade. According to someone in the main forum, the ones with the ATS-55 and titanium handle were below par in terms of Spyderco's usual standard? Is there any chance that it will be replaced with the VG-10 blade if I send it back? Or should I exchange it with the shop? They have one with a VG-10 plain edge. Ideally I'd like a comboedge but if the blade is going to be resharpened I'll try for an exchange or send it back if I have no choice I guess. Was just getting used to the feel of the knife. Would be a pity to buy a new knife and not see it for about two months. Sigh. Please advise. Thank you very much.

If you do send it back (will bite you with shipping), they'll fix it up for you.
I have the same problem with the Salsa and they fix it up immediately

Hi Sal,

I have spoken to the shop I bought the knife from. They have a plain edge VG-10 Peter Herbst but are not willing to exchange it with mine so I will have to send it in to get it repaired. Couple of questions I'd like to ask if possible. My apologies for taking up your time.

Is it true what I was told that the early batch of ATS-55 Peter Herbsts were problematic? Will the blade be reground so that it no longer contacts the lanyard pipe when closed? Or will the blade be replaced? If replaced, would it be possible to replace it with a VG-10 Combo instead of a ATS-55 Combo which is what I have? And lastly, after reaching your factory, how long will it take before I get it back?

Buying a new knife and then having it go MIA for a long time is kind of a bummer. Hope you can enlighten me. Once again, thanks very much for your time Sal.

Best regards,

Adrian

The ATS-55 Herbst had no problems. We just changed to VG-10 in a subsequent run. Both are good steels. What we would do with your knife (unless there was some other problem) would be to resharpen the edge so there was no contact with the lanyard pipe. Sorry or the inconvenience.

Hi Sal,

Thanks for your reply. I've had much problems with the shop over here but the knife will be sent over soon. Hope to get it back in the not so distant future. Have to say its quite nice of the President of Spyderco to actually take time to respond to me. Way to go.

Once again, thanks for your information and response.

and that's why we love spyderco and hang around here (ok plus a host of other reasons too)!;) :)

Dear Sal,

The shop where I got the knife frmo is of the opinion that if I send the knife back to Spyderco for repairs, the blade will be reground in such a way that it will no longer look proportional. i do not know the reason for this. Is it because of the comboedge? Or some other reason that I am not aware of? Please advise.

Thanks

Adrian

adrian,
if it was said like this "you sure you wanna return, ah? after that the knife won't look proportional, y'know? ahh...sure or not? don't say I never warn you ah" (local speak), then take that with a pinch of salt cos it would be just to discourage you from asking them to return it on your behalf. don't worry so much - spyderco will make it right.

I think that Spyderco has some of the best knifemakers in America working in our factory. You send, we fix. Please send it to my attention. thanx and again, sorry for the hassle.

Hi Sal,

My knife was sent to Spyderco together with two knives which belong to another user on this forum. The knife has been returned and I am very disappointed when even he noticed that the manufacture defect which I sent the knife back to your company to fix was unaddressed. The ding in the blade at the portion which touches the lanyard pipe is still there and quite obvious even to him. The blade was not resharpened at all. From what I can see, it doesn't look like anything has been done to rectify my knife. After hearing so much kudos about Spyderco customer service, I'm disappointed to say the least. Perhaps my expectations of a knife are unrealistic? I've recently acquired a Buck Mayo, a few benchmades, a Camillus and none have any such problems whatsoever. Perhaps some customers outside of America are not so important. You said quote "You send we fix" unquote. Apparently not. My first and last spyderco which will be confined to the bottom of the POS drawer which incidentally only has one knife so far. This one. Even my ten year old Victorinox has managed to stay out of there.

Yours disappointedly

Sounds like something bad happened in W and R.I have had great service from them.I am sure Sal will be along to make it right.

Hi Aaltl. Very sorry for your disappointment. I'm sure there was a muck up somewhere in the system. We made some changes in Warrantee & Repair recently....??

I'll talk to Dr. Mike about it. Will get back to you. We surely don't want to be the only knife stuck in your POS drawer. (especially when being compared to SAKs).

Dear Sal,

Despite trying to convince myself that Spyderco customer service is below par, each time you sway my stand. Sigh. Its been almost two months since I've had the knife. I guess all I can do is wait. Please accept my apology for the caustic post earlier.

Hi Aaltl, We're having a little difficulty isolating the records of your knife. Would you be so kind as to email me your name and address so we can access the records via name?

thanx much,

sal
