Many reports of Axis Lock Problems?

In the "Opinel" thread in Knife Reviews & Testing, there's a claim about "multiple reports of problems" with the Axis lock. I only ever read one complaint about an axis lock filling with dirt and one complaint about a broken spring. My 710 and 705 have served me well for years with nary a problem. I know several people with Axis lock knives, and they all love the system. Am I totally clueless here? Are Axis locks really POS's in disguise and I'm the last guy to know about it, or are they simply one of the best locking mechanisms available like I've always thought?

All things mechanical are going to have some problems. It is the nature of the beast. The Axis lock has very few problems considering how many of them there is out there. I think it is easily one of the best locks on the market today.

If this turns out to be a pole-type thread I'll just stick in my two cents now.
I have the Axis on a 710. I love it . And no I have had no problems or gripes so far.

no way is the axis lock a POS in disguise

having said that, one of the springs in my 940 broke. but it didnt have to do with the design, just the spring

awaiting replacements, should be coming soon

Well the familiar liner locking knifes doesn't uses springs, so some people may frown upon the Axis lock if the springs break. Springs eventually do, but I must admit, I love the Axis lock a lot. Although I don't own one, but I've tried it. It's sweet!

does anyone have a diagram of how an axis lock works. I dig the lock and have a very good general Idea of how they work but would like to see it directly from Benchmade.

I've had an 806 for about a month and a half. It feels solid and strong. Someone else had a problem with his 806, but that is the only porblem I have heard of.

When it says "multiple" it means there's been more than one case of failures, not 10,000 of them. There's been perhaps 3 cases of springs breaking but the lock still worked, the one where a 730 was used to cut sod and jammed open but was fine after it was cleaned out, and the 806 that had issues when flicked open. That makes 5 failures, 1 of which was user related out of all the Axis lock knives that have been sold in the last few years, I'd say that's a pretty good record, especially once you consider how much people play with the darn things.

There is your answer.

I have carried my 710 for the better part of a year without any failures and there is nothing to suggest it will fail. I suppose in time the springs might give up but I expect this to occur only after thousands and thousands of cycles. If the lock is filled with dirt or contamination and will not operate, I do not consider it a fault of the lock.

hd2k-va--I would not lose a minute of sleep over it. The Axis lock has proven to be very safe and reliable. In a very competitive market, it's clearly one of knifedom's great success stories. Enjoy the knife.:)

I've owned BM720, BM730, and three BM710 for the past two years and have not experienced any problems with the locking mechanism.

This thread kind of reminds me of the "REKAT Sifu rolling-lock failure" threads of the past.:barf:.:barf:.

Sure, ANYTHING mechanical that has moving parts can fail, but unless it's a large margin of the product that fails, then I would think that it's "normal" to see a few "fail" now and then...BTW, I STILL carry my Sifu (It's one of my 2 "EDC's"), and have 100% confidence in it!.:).

I've had about 7 or 8 Axis lock folders and I have carried and used them a lot. Never once have I ever had a problem with any of them. I think they are one of the best locks around.

I'm not saying that Axis locks fail. I think they're great, and rarely hear bad reports. That's what made the comment about "multiple failures" jump out and make me say, "huh?" It seems so insensible that someone would be wary of BM products because of the reliability of the Axis lock.

Like Aerius says, when you consider the play factor Axis locks probably get 10 times the use of anything else. Mine do. I can carry most folders all day without taking them out of my pocket. But my 705 and 710 are flick flick flick click click clicking away time after time.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to know that I'm not losing my mind :D

hmm, i also have to add that even though one of hte springs broke in my axis lock, it still works fine. just should this spring break, the knife wont lock. so having two springs is like having a safety, the other one is there just incase one breaks. and it gives you time to get a new one without having to put it out of action
