I have access to Manzanita Burl's. If you've never seen them, it's gorgeous wood with lots of figure and color. The downside is the burls have many voids and large cracks. It's hard if not impossible to get a solid piece of wood. My thought is to stabilize a piece of wood and then fill the voids with colored epoxy. The wood has a red color to it so turquoise colored epoxy would be nice. I just don't know if this will work. Anybody have experience with this type of problem? Filling voids in the wood? Thanks and Merry Christmas

It works. It's best of you can find a piece with few or no cracks or voids.
Some folks fill minor with CA glue. Some epoxy.
This piece is unstabilized, uncoated. Just beeswax and mineral oil coating.
It has darkened over time a bit, but I like it. This is my personal knife.

Well I don't know that I would feel comfortable selling you any, but I would definitely be interested in a trade. Unless the cost of shipping is prohibited. Interested?

Love trading. I have stabilized rayed oak and some stabilized regular manzanita wood.

I run a portable sawmill on the weekends for extra money. So I get a lot of different Native Woods here in California White Oak Black Oak madrone, yew, Manzanita, black locust, Cottonwood, maple, Alder, Cedar Pine and Fir. I just got a gallon of cactus juice for Christmas so I'm going to start manufacturing some of my own stock. Really interested in finding some good filler material because I do have wood with voids in them. I think if I can find the right material it will look really good.

It is is a very durable wood. In high school i made a key chain out of the red colored heart wood from a manzanita branch from the Shasta Area (CA). About 5 years later, I gave it to the girl I was dating. Anyways, we are married and she still has it on her key ring ... 35 years later. The only thing I did to it since was replace the cord that attaches it to the key ring.
