KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) - Nepalese soldiers killed at least 80 guerrillas in a foiled attack by the rebels on an army camp, military officials said Tuesday.
In the attack Monday night at Khara village, about 250 miles west of the capital, Katmandu, five soldiers were killed and another 21 injured.
A military official speaking on customary condition of anonymity said hundreds of rebels attacked the army camp close sometime around midnight.
The attack came hours after Nepal's King Gyanendra renewed emergency rule for another three months, at the request of the prime minister.
Emergency rule was first imposed on Nov. 26, after the rebels withdrew from stalled peace talks and resumed their attacks. It was extended in February for another three months.
The military says nearly 1,800 rebels have been killed in army sweeps of their mountain hide-outs since November, more than half of the 3,500 people killed in the past six years of insurgency.
The rebels, who draw their inspiration from the late Chinese revolutionary Mao Zedong, want to overthrow the monarchy and create a socialist republic.
