Yangdu sent me this picture and asked to post it on the forum. It appears to be a picture of Maoists demonstrating the use of the khukuri. I hope this doesn't precede an upsurge in violence in Nepal.

Good photo.

It more peacefull than any time in last 15 years I am told. Of course that could change again at some time.

They have slegal power in the goverment now.

The head of the Communist party has just spent $30,000 doing up his house house though & is surrounded by models & actresses., so I guess hes won the lottery or someones bought him off for the time bieng, so perhaps hes just as currupt as the King & his minions are.

Intresting they have modern Bazaar kukri, they did sometimes prefer the 100 year old Nepal army kukri when they were doing the punishment dismemberment of informers etc.

Still I guess there a lot of them, so same as some have , m.16,AK47, G3, others Lee Enfield & a few Brown Besses still, they must have many style of kukri.

Thanks, Steve , for posting this picture. But I had hoped never to see khukuris in the hands of those who serve an evil cause.:( :(

What exactly do the Maoists stand for? What is their complaint against the king? I know nothing of the political situation in Nepal.

Um...let's see...Mao? Maybe Communism?

I was relieved to see the relatively harmless image (I knew it would be when I saw Steve originated it). Makes good PR for one cause or another I'd guess.

I stand to be corrected as my knowledge is just based on what Nepali friends have told me. But the impresion I have got is the following. Its minimal and an outside amatuers veiw.

Nepal has always been run by the corrupt forever, Its a class society, thats how the hindu religion works..

The untouchables normaly have no medical care or education, even if there supposed to.

So the Maoists main support is amongst the Untouchables, but for sure they head Maoists just manipulate the people the same as Bin Laden & his gang Manipulate young male muslims or Hitler manipulated the Germans.

The king absolved the semi democratic parliment & took tottalitarion power just as his anscestors had since pre. 1902, a few years back, on the grounds the poloticians were corrupt, {they were.} & that they failed to break the maoists.

End result was the maoists gained support & now share govermet, the vice prime minister is a maoist. If the king hadnt allowed that he would probably now be exilled {or dead.} & have lost all his palaces etc. He backed down when hundreds of Police in the capitol joined the Maoist demonstrations etc.

The Army & Police are know theoreticaly controled by the new goverment not the king.

But most army Generals are still from the rulling Kings Shah & the Rana familys.

Evryone in Nepal has kukri, kukris they have done much evil over hundreds of years. It just depends who held it. {you guys know that one, from the firearms stuff.} Nepal is lovely but hard. Pre. 1928 slavery was still legal, & if you said you thought the Prime minster was ugly, curropt, fat, whatever or told a joke about him & an informer told soldiers, the would be dismembered in the street.{with kukri.} Legaly.

I am told since the outbreak of peace lots of western & Indian buisnessess are setting up there & that it is embracing western style products & lifestyle unbeliaviably fast.

i guess Maoists today like Capitalism, just like in China.

I hope the untouchables, {basicaly anyone who works with, meat, leather, steel, gold, silver etc.} will obtain a better life.Eduacation & medical care & the right to drink water from a public well.

But I expect the hierachy whether, communist, Royalist or Brhamin will still live of the poor. But then I am cynical about politicians whatever thier creed.

as I say thats the impresion Ive gained, i wouldnt take it as gospel.

Hmm, corrupt King or corrupt communist leader... I guess the wolves wear all manner of clothing. The labels don't seem to make much difference.

Thats politics, class & often religion as well it seems.

Predaters often dont show there true innerselves untill its to late.

If the photo does have malicious intent, it more disturbing to me that they appear to be no older than 15 or so.

There much nastier recent past photos from Nepal of stuff done with kukri, by police, army & maoists. They all kill people if you mess with them.

I Dont reckon that photo scares anyone in Nepal.{asside from thier belief in many lives.}

They live with brutal reality, not likly to get woosy nightmares from a posy photo.

Peace has broken out. ;)

Its just young soldiers strutting there stuff for a display.

In WW2 loads of Gurkhas were signed up by the Brit army to fight the Japs in Burma at around 14 years of age.

Rural Untouchables often start earning thier food by doing a days labour at the age of about 5.

Its the thirld world. They grow up fast. no molliecoddling.

It's like the gangs here probably. You don't see any older ones because they're all either locked up or dead...

Due to the king giving up total power as the living descendant of the sun god walking on earth & alloweing free elections as of Jan 14, 2007 - Nepal's Maoist rebels took a quarter of the seats in a new parliament as they enter the political mainstream. Nearly nine months after the rebels and the government reached a ceasefire deal, members of a new 330-seat parliament, including 83 Maoists, were sworn-in after the cabinet approved an interim constitution

I figured the political reality was a bit more complicated than just communisim VS monarchy.

I think it is interesting that as you kind of mention Spiral that in this 21st century that it is not Capitalisim vs Communisim, that the communists have retained their control of the people but are earning much more money by embracing capitalisim.

I have not kept up with the situation in Nepal, but apparently there are ongoing conflicts which are being cited as potential obstacles to the peace process:

Yes you have Eric thats today news!

Ive never even heard of the Madhasi, which shows what I know, but trouble in a couple of border villages shouldnt make a lot of differnce to the overall situation in Nepal.
