I just got a Schatt & MOrgan tear drop jack with stabilized maple burl scales and also an Al Mar hawk with black lip pearl scales. I've never really had a knife with wood or pearl scales and I was wondering if there was any thing special i had to do (or not do) in order to take care of the wood/pearl.

Some times I'll use a small drop of miniral oil in order to lube my other knives. Is it okay if the wood and pearl scales are exposed to small amounts of mineral oil? ( I use Mineral oil cuz some of my knives i use to cut food)

Thanks in advance for any advice,

-Jay

Pearl is a delicate material. Carry it in a separate pocket or a good leather pouch, otherwise it will chip and crack.

A bit of good furniture wax polish on each will not hurt.

Maple if very hard naturally (they called it "hard-rock" before "rock" was cool) and being stabilized it is very hard.

Pearl is somewhat sensitive to chemicals which is why women wearing pearl necklaces have to be careful but it is strong stuff as a scale on a knife and I don't think you need to worry too much. I have a black lipped pearl automatic knife (which is really a golden color, not sure where the black lip is) on my workbench and have never had any problems. Every now and then I spray some WD-40 on it but it is a beater.
