Okay, so my GPS315 broke, and I traded it in (+$200) to Magellan for an Explorist 600. I now want to get some software for it. I am looking at the Mapsend 3D Topo USA software. Are there better options out there? How about freeware? I am going to use this for hunting and hiking primarily, and driving on long trips every now and again.
Thanks.

If you want to actually load the maps onto the GPS unit, you are limited to the Magellan MapSend products.

But if you're looking for computer software that will interact with your GPS, there are lots of choices depending on what you need and want. I use the DeLorme Topo USA software that has topo data of the entire country and 3D viewing for less than $100. National Geographic has similar computer software that looks good too. If you want actual topo quad maps for the computer, several companies sell those for about $100 per state.

And yes, there are some freeware GPS/GIS programs for the computer, some that will even communicate directly with commericial GPS units. It's a real chore though, trying to figure out which gov't data sets work with which programs, and where to get the data sets. If you want more info on this, I can come up with a couple of links.

Haha! You double-posted. :D
