Hi guys,
having been bit by the gear bug recently, I am eyeballing the Marathon - G-SAR.

I dont want to buy it and discover that there is something better for that price and maybe cheeper.

I need a watch that is very tough for all conditions but would also look good ina buisness suite. Is it too bulky
What do you think guys?

My preference for both work and business would be a pilot's watch rather than the GSAR, which is basically a dive watch in style and size. I'd also go for a smaller dive watch, but what the hell, I wear Seiko divers including an Orange Monster to work in a suit. You might take a look at MK II watches--custom renditions of military watch designs, with high-end swiss automatic movements. There's a great looking pilot (Quad 10) as well as a diver inspired by the Vietnam era Benrus (the great grandpa of the Marathon SAR watches, basically), and new diver, too.

The GSAR is a great looking watch, and well made from what I hear. I've never liked the tritium tube look, even though I'm sure it's got excellent visibility in the dark. I think you're right to be looking at automatic, military style watches just cause that's my personal preference. You might also look at Ollech and Wajs watches, which are a bit cheaper (westcoasttime.com has them). Archimede and Fortis (one of my favorites) make nice pilots, and Fortis has great divers, too. And don't forget Glycine.

Poor Man's Watch Forum (www.pmwf.com) is a great place with really nice people who can tell you all you'd ever want to know about the GSAR and other watches.

Have fun watch shopping!

You can't go wrong with a Marathon G-SAR :D bought one about a month back and have been wearing it non-stop. While it's tall (thick) it's not a super huge beast of a watch.

A second vote goes to the Poor Man's Watch Forum that Gus recommended.

Mark II Watches are a great bang for the buck.

And finally if you're looking for a military style watch drop Howard a line at:

I got my G-SAR from him and he is an absolute gem to deal with.

Good luck in your search.

Fortis watches are nice for their pricepoint. A pilot style Fortis watch works better in a business suit then a diver.

i really like the marathon myself, might be fixing to get 1, for that kinda dollar i dont know of anything i would prefer.

I am a big believer in Seikos as cheap watches. I have an Orange Monster that I bought a few years ago. I was wearing a Rolex GMT when I bought the watch. The Seiko case and band seemed to be built at a much higher quality than the Rolex. I was especially happy with the solid links in the band.

That being said for $675, I am really happy with the used (barely) Omega Seamaster Professional Automatic that I bought at a pawnshop for $700 out the door. I would recomend that everyone get one for that price. It even came with the boxes and all the paper work!

well, all i can say is your orange monster must be wayyyy nicer than the ones i've seen, none of them have the F&F rolex does.

or i suppose your GMT mighta been funky lol.

I recently got the tritium bug as well. After doing a lot of looking on the internet, I found the one I bought at Hammacher Schlemmer (or however you spell it). It was half price closeout for $99 plus shipping. It has the dive watch look with metal body and bezel, date and a quality leather strap. They only had the white-faced model left. The face says Weems & Plath. I liked it so much I bought another one as a gift.

After reading some reviews of tritium watches, I had doubts if I would be happy with the brightness. I was very pleased...very bright at night and noticeable even under dim light. Good luck.
