I'm looking for an inexpensive axe to keep in my car. I've been eyeing the Marbles Camp Axe. Anyone have any experience with these or other recommendations? I'm looking for something that's a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none general purpose tool, trying to keep it under $40. Prefer a wooden handle.

If you can compromise with the wooden handle, what about mora camp axe? Bit more worry free as it has plastic handle.

Council tool boys axe. Runs about $30 last I checked, and has a wooden handle :). Sounds like what your looking for.

I don't have any experience with the marbles, or the council. The council is on my list though, may get it eventually.

There is an axe specific forum on here. I believe Condor makes the axe in question for Marbles. I have the small hatchet that they made for a little while. The finish is good the steel seems solid, and the handle is well fit. The thing I think I like the least about it is the handle. If I hold onto it I may end up replacing it. There are other options out there. Council, Vaughan (hatchets are still made in the USA), or restore an old axe or hatchet.

Marbles is the second to the left.

How about a leather handle? Estwing makes a nice 14 inch Sportsmans Axe which sells for under the $40 mark.

Had to run some errands today, including picking up some air filters at a big box hardware/building supply store for the "home." Stopped by the hand tools to look at the Estwing again. I think my concern with it is it narrows towards the head, making it difficult to choke up on if needed.

I bought the Marbles Camp Axe for about $25. For that amount it is not crap but after some use I feel the head is too heavy for such a short handle. I may rehang the bit onto another, longer, handle.
Compared to my GB Wildlife and Small forest models are way more controllable than the Marbles.
With my experience I am sure you can find a better tool.
I have zero experience with other brands of axes etc.
