I have a customer that would like me to make him a version of the Marbles Canoe Knife. Here is an example.

My question is regarding the pommel. I believe they were aluminum but he would like the guard and pommel to be nickel silver. I have material for the guard but not for the pommel. Jantz has nickel silver pommels in 1" diameter that are 5/8" thick. Is this wide enough to start with to be able to sculpt the front of the pommel like the picture? I'm not sure of the specs on one of these. To me it looks like a 1 1/4" blade. I might have him consider 416 stainless because I can get 1.5" dia round stock easily. I can't seem to find any larger dia nickel silver.
What do you all think?
Thanks!

the pommel looks wider than the blade, so the stock would have to be over 1 1/4" thick in one direction? how about soldering two blocks or rectangles together to make a larger thicker piece? it could be pinned for better stability.

Yes the back end of the pommel does look wider than the knife blade. I was hoping to find 1.5" dia stock and then grind down the front part of the pommel to approximate the appearance of the original.
I could look into soldering, I don't have the equipment for that at present.

All you need it silver solder, flux and a propane torch from home depot.

You can get the silver solder and flux from amazon or ebay

Would casting be an option?
I suppose it would, I would prefer to stock remove if possible.

That's good to know, thanks Adam. I have had a hard time finding nickel silver in wider than 1" stock. Any suggestions?

Another option would be to grind/machine a block of aluminum and drill and tap it. I can get aluminum bar stock in the correct dimensions. Then use 416 for the guard.

From an owner perspective I'd definitely prefer being guided to the stainless if you have the ability to finish it to his liking. I have an old nickel silver bolstered knife and the corrosion between the bolster and leather sheath is annoying.

I would go with aluminum. It is accurate for that knife and will give it much better balance then a heavy piece of nickel silver on that end.

Good point I'll convey this to the buyer.
