I was just at the Melbourne gun and knife show. While I was there helping my friend out a person came to my friend and sold him a double head ax made by marbles. I did a search on the net using my cell phone and I can not find it any where. Does any body know about it?? I tried to find another one but is seams they don’t make it any more. Is this a collectors item?? It looks like brand new.

Marbles Is making them in Asia nowadays, i'm pretty sure in China where all their knives are made. If it's marked Gladstone it's likely an older one. Some folks say the steel is OK, some say it's not, everyone says the hafting eye sucks and the current Asian hafts are really bad.

I got one, the haft broke in 5 swings. It took lots of work to rehaft that 3 holed eye, it was a bitch. Then again, I did it with knives, chisels, and sandpaper.
The steel, meh, I can't say it's horrible, in that it does cut and chop. I have only had to touch it up so far, but I've limbed a few small trees with it, and have no chips or rolling.
The edge of mine wasn't ground evenly, one edge veers off a bit to one side. I got mine at a pawn shop, and the only knife store in Lexington KY sells them as well. I think $40 is too much for such a crappy piece of wood, what ever it is, it's light dry and brittle, they paint them as to hide the bad grain alignment.

Hey Foxx, the new ones are stainless aren't they?

Actually, Marble's just released a line of axes that's manufactured by Imacasa in El Salvador just like their machetes. It's likely one of those.

This one looks old but it has never been used. I went on the web looking for it and I could only find single head axes not one double head axe. Why is that?? It does not look cheap made at all. I think the person stored this one. It still has the plastic guards on booth of the blades. The handle has never been painted. How would you tell if it is made in the USA?? I don’t see any where it is made at. It comes with a leather cover that goes over the head and snaps shut to protect the head when not in use.

IDK, mine is not stainless, it has bit's of rust spots on it, stays in the truck. Here's mine, with a ball peen hickory handle....poorly hung, waiting for it to fail, so I can try it again...

Robin,
Thanks, it was my Grandfather's, or maybe even his Father's, I'm not sure. It says CUTSURE on the blade(s), and I was told it was last made about 1962'-63'. I got it with the rest of my Grandfather's knives, all folders.

Hi Foxx
Somehow I failed to notice the other blades making it a congress pattern of course. I see you posted it on Bernards forum for ID. I would say your grand fathers knife is much older than the 60s. Great to see that you haven't cleaned it, it's a really nice knife.

I didn't see the other blades either- the Nessmuk tableau made me expect a two-blader. I like the sheath knife too.

Someone told me recently that you can no longer be sure that a Marbles that says Gladstone is an old one. He was a slightly surly cuss, so I couldn't nail down his source for that info.

I bought a few Marbles knives that were made offshore to test the quality. They were made in China which was Not marked on the knife anywhere only on the boxes. None were marked Gladstone. Most of the old American company Trade names have been bought, Schrade and I believe Camillus are now owned by Taylor and are making some pretty nasty crap IMO under these great old names. There are however some pretty great pieces coming out of China.

I didn't mean to disparage Chinese manufacturing. It's just that I wouldn't want to buy an antique Gladstone Marbles and then find out it wasn't antique. Or Gladstonian.

Didn't think you were Bro. I haven't seen one from asia with a gladstone mark, haven't seen any of their knives or axes marked. I'm pretty sure old gladstone double bits are pretty rare. I watch the bay for them and to be honest haven't seen more that two in all the years i've watched. You see quite a few of the marbles safety axes and the steel handled hatchets with the built in guards but no doubles ;-(

Best regards

Robin
