I am seriously thinking of getting a Marbles Ideal, possibly the stag model from the latest AG Russell catalog.. Does anyone have anything positive/negative to say about this knife?

Is it good for everyday use, or is it more of a display item?

I apologize for being a noob, but would gratefully appreciate any replies. Thanks in advance....

No one needs to apologize for being a noob. We all started off as new some time.

What everyday use do you foresee? A carbon steel knife will eventually stain (patina) and the shiny bits will get scuffed. Being a hidden tang knife, with huge scallops taken from the sides, it will not be the world's toughest field blade.

Other than being a little steep in the price for such a basic steel, the Marbles will make a fine user for non-extreme outdoor use or as a display piece with some light oiling or siliconing.

The older I get the more I love a good patina. I think the Marbles Ideal is a classic and a great place to start or continue.

The Marbles Ideal was the hunting knife for several generations - it was the model for the WWII military knife, ie, the KaBar Marine/Army knife. Great knife, a real classic!

I have a Marble's Ideal with a tigerwood handle that I got when I was about 10 years old. I hate to say it, but that was over 40 years ago. I carried that knife through numerous campouts in the Boy Scout, a few hunting trips with my father, and it was my basic outdoors knife for several years.

I retired that Marble's several years ago, and have replaced it with more "modern" knives; however, I would not hesitate a minute before taking the old favorite back into the woods as my primary knife. It performed well for me for years within the scope of jobs it was designed to do. I think it is one of the most graceful knife designs around.
