Does anyone have any experience Marbles knives? They look very cool, im a fan of traditional knives. I dont know much about how 52100 steel performs, or 5160 for that matter. Thoughts anyone.

Do a search in the shoptalk forum on 52100. Its a non stainless carbon steel. From what I've heard it is supposed to be tough, and hold an edge well. As long as your not looking for corrosian resistance, it should make a nice knife.

I bought a Marble's Fieldcraft with stacked leather handle, a 2/3 size version of their larger woodcraft, but same blade thickness. A very nice compact blade. I am highly impressed with the 52100 steel; it takes and holds a fantastic edge: as good as and maybe better than Carbon V. It absolutely is the sharpest knife I own, after a few licks on a fine DMT stone and stropping with chromium dioxide honing compound. It doesn't seem quite as susceptible to rust, either, or staining from exposure to meat and acids, as Carbon V (maybe there's a tad more chrome in 52100). The grind was off a little bit -- in fact, it wouldn't have gotten out Cold Steel's door -- but a bit of judicious work with a Dremel fixed that to my satisfaction. These are very high quality blades, in a classic design. The sheath is by far the best commercial leather sheath I've ever bought.

As much as I like the new designs that knife makers are constantly coming out with... I still love my Marbles for my more "traditional" blades.

Good fit and finish, good steel,... and I'll have to agree, one of the best sheaths on the market. They use the heavy "Harness Leather" in all the sheaths I've seen. The Marbles emblem stamped in the leather sheath is a nice touch also.

Buy one, you won't regret it!

What can I say about Marble's?
Great knives!
NO! WAIT!!
Not great knives, Outstanding knives!

The 52100 steel is a real performer.
Couple that with the convex edge Marble's puts on these knives, and these are cutting monsters.
These knives slice manila rope with a passionate abandon.
They are a real joy to use for utility type cutting chores.

Ed Fowler did a comparison for Blade magazine using a 1930 Woodcraft to which he stated that it would outcut most current production blades. A new '98 Woodcraft outcut the old model by 30%. Enough said. Great knife, great steel. And scary sharp out of the box to boot. Own a pre-patent pending (1915) Woodcraft and the knife is still in EXCELLENT shape. My experience with the new 52100 models is with the Centenial Woodcraft and current Fieldcrafts. Have an Expert II on the way. If there is a sharper knife out of the box for the money I would like to see it!

Custom Knifemaker Ed Fowler spoke of Marble's Knives in one of his Blade magazine articles. Said many good things about the knives. Mr. Fowler works with 52100 steel and is very familiar with its qualities and performance.

I also read an article in Knifeworld, May 1999 issue, that said when Blackjack Knives went belly up, much of their equipment and many of the Blackjack employees went to work for Marble's, including Mike Stewart, who was the head of Blackjack, and now, per this article leads the Marble's Cutlery Division.

And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold the great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads...And His tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth; and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

I've bought one (a bison) and a friend has bought four. All of them have been wicked sharp right from the box. Even the big-ass trailmaker.

I think very highly of Marble's knives and am impressed with the 52100 steel. I have a Sport and Plainsman and have a Woodcraft on order. They are very sharp out of the box, only bested, in my experience, by my Spyderco Moran. They have comfortable handles, functional blade designs made from good steel coupled with good sheaths and they are available at reasonable prices. I think it is a winning combination.

I just want to chime in here and say that I love the Marbles. Best bang for the buck around in fixed blades. If you shop around you can find some interesting handles such as black micarta and buffalo horn. I think the Fieldcraft blade design is simply awesome. It will clean squirrels and skin a moose.

Hoodoo (or anyone), are you sure that a black micarta handle is an option. Im not tring to insult you or anything, but ive never seen that on a marble anywhere. If they are available, where can i get them? Please reply.

My only complaint with the Marbles knives is that none of the smaller ones come with as much of a guard as I like. I also don't like convex grinds.

I will agree with the rest, Marbles is a tremendous knife. I have many of them and they all come scary sharp. Really a great bang for your buck. The 52100 steel holds an edge really well, its not stainless so you may find the blade may stain and over time the blade will get a nice gray patina to it, which doesn't look bad. Put some Tuff-Cloth on the blade and you'll have no problems.

For those of you looking for Micarta handled Marbles you can find them at the Cutlery Shoppe. http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/

If you get a Marbles you won't regret it.

Take care,
Tom
