Anyone know who makes the new machete's for Marble's? I just got one a while back and have to say they are pretty sweet for the money. Convex edge, decent sheath with pockets and a stone.

Lota talk in the RAT forum is about which survival knife is best, etc etc blah blah blah, and without fail Jeff always brings up the Machete. (He seems to have Joe's addiction). I just picked up a couple of the Marbles off FleaBay to check it out. We'll have to see how they do in COLD weather, since they are the cat's meow in the wamrer areas. :)

Got a bunch of junk machetes on the way too. The plan is in Jan or Feb, when it is REALLY cold up my way, and has been below zero for a few days in a row. And just compare them to the heavier KaBar Cutlass, Ontario SP8, Kershaw Outcast, maybe a few others. Will write it all up, but this is mostly for fun. :)

Coffee, be careful of hemlock! That stuff is EVIL on machetes. Frozen pine is pretty bad too, and the knots can break chunks out of snow and neally axes!

Now in that Axe book I had, they talked about heating axes in really cold weather before you chop. Tell me that doesn't apply for a much thinner steel! Just my 2 cents and twisted theories.

Rgr that Joe, one of the reasons I am doing this is to show what i prefer something beefier up here. And of course because playing with big sharp pieces of steel is fun, in a Jason kinda way. :)

Note that I did say cheap Machetes, and I think I will most likely have only one or two Condors to play with. Hell I am gonna have to save up til Feb to buy all the blades :)

I think you can get them on ebay or SMKW. The handle will not be flush with the tang, so you may either fill or sand down the bugger.

I've never taken a swing at hemlock so far, but I've hit plenty of frozen pine knots in my time. The biggest thing to keep in mind when chopping in cold weather is to always chop as if you WILL hit a knot. If you're extra mindful of your technique and avoid twisting or "rolling" through the cut then you'll be fine. It's only if you get a bit sloppy and torque or skip during the chop that you tend to have issues. YMMV though. :)

Those are handsome! I didn't know marbles made machetes. Mr. RAT is certainly quite a proponent of them, and many folks prefer them as main wilderness blades on this forum as well. I have to say I've never been able to warm up to them for anything but clearing light vegetation, I just prefer an axe/hatchet for these Kentucky woods.

Just for fun try getting something like the Condor Outback machete and see how it does. Sometimes that extra tip mass is just what you need. :D

The marbles are carbon

Outback machete is 420 HC

Just to let anyone know that was thinking about purchasing one from SMKW; they are currently out of stock on both styles of Marbles machete they carry.

Will they continue to be made and sold through online dealers (without Marble's branding and coloring) now that Marble's Cutlery is closing the doors? I've been wanting one of the short ones, but while I love orange, it's just a bit much.
