This Mardi Meshejian art dagger is not to be believed. The shipment just arrived today. It's a HUGE piece. Note the size comparison with the 17" laptop and with David Darom's book, "The World of Art Knives". Damn thing is 20" long, heavy and THICK!

Three bar composite damascus, the center piece being a timing chain and the walls a twist made from 1095 & 4130. The handle is the end of a mammoth tusk & pink ivory wood, with over an ounce of 18k gold to "fuse" the handle with blade. Synthetic Padparadscha cut in the 1920's in the end (with more 18k gold) and peridot and pink tourmaline cut stones set in the handle side (in more 18k gold). Mardi was a jeweler before he began to make knives.

Someone wasn't watching, because this was purchased for less than the scrap value of the gold in the dagger. Whoa! It's great sculpture, too, not just a dagger.

Wow! Not my personal taste but that is a stunning piece of art and craftsmanship.

Funny that you put it that way, because that's exactly the way I feel about it. It seems so much more like sculpting - I really like the sum of the parts, but not sure I see it as a "knife", but love it as a sculpture.

COOL Bob! In a couple of the pictures, the angle makes the top of the handle look like a lizard's head, with the stone as the eye.

Congrats!

+1 and amazing. It's like organic or something- like it grew not made.

I've handled that piece at Ashokan some years ago. Mardi is a craftsman second to none, and a great easy going guy to chat knives with. ~Herb

Bob, I hope you had a chance to chat with Mardi about this. He's a fanatastic guy and speaks his own knife language.

What a treat. :) Of course it's an unfunctional 'knife' for cutting. Nonetheless it conveys a sense of ceremony and richness while still as functional as a dagger, to stick into a zombie, or an adversary's hand as he tries to grab the jewels.

Works for me! ;)

Bob that is one major score:eek:!
Nice work!

Bob, I wouldn't call this a knife, but it is however a really cool looking objet d'art:thumbup:

Lovely piece. Where did you buy it from?

Joss, it was one of the 100 knives up for auction in Chicago a couple of weeks back.

Marcel-

For me, "knife" means "sharp" or "pointy". But I do seem to think of it as a dagger, for some reason. Probably the shape. I think Coop's post captured the essence best.

Joss, just got up. Marcel beat me to the reply.

Best,

Bob

EDIT: Marcel, see, you just called it a "knife" above, make up your mind!

You walked right into that one, LOL.

Bob

EDIT: But seriously, the deal was just too good to pass up and it is astonishingly beautiful sitting on a marble table, no matter whether it's a knife, knife-ish, a dagger - or a really wonderful piece of sculpture, using several mediums. It helps that it is in pristine shape - it's really grown on me and it will be around a long, long time. I have it in a living area away from my knife displays, so it stands on it's own merit - and very well, too.

Must be wonderful, Bob, to be able to display such a sculptured
knife object where everyone - even if popping in for a minute -
will notice it with amazement....

Check out the little knife he made in "...Custom Knifemaking" on page 72-73...
His knife art IS original.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Yes, this is a piece that is best displayed by itself, based on size and complexity.

And I've read this particular book so many times, I know every knife in it, David. A great book, too!
