Hey guys. I have a Marfione custom socom delta coming in soon.

My question is, How bad am I going to have to baby this blade?
Its a mirror polish hollow grind tanto point. I know its going to be absolutely beautiful. But im just thiking... its a mirrior polish. As soon as I cut through something moderately tough its going to leave some sort of a scuff right?

How well do these things hold up?

I bet sending this thing out to microtech for a fresh mirror polish would be pretty pricey.

It is a mirror polish, and a custom Marfione(aka collector's knife)

No insult intended, but you have two choices.....make it a safe queen and enjoy it that way, or cut with it, use it, edc it, and accept that you will probably own it in whatever condition you keep it in forever.

For me mirror polishes are one of the easiest to maintain

Not like Tony does them Joe, it's hard to keep the crisp grind lines that he does, just by stepping up to a buffer and having at it.

We will see I'm EDCing my new Fire with the mirror polish and so far no issues

Cleans right up

Well I guess it didnt work out guys.

I got it and sent it back. The blade was surprisingly dull. I dont understand how a $1800 knife could be that dull. Everything else was flawless otherwise.
I think im going to stay away from mirror polish from now on.

Like Kohai said, It would pretty much become a safe queen. I would like to use my knife. However I am ok with getting a marfione custom and using it. But im going to go for a different finish.

What do you guys thing about the "double vapor blast" finishes on some of the customs? Do you think that would rub off like their DLC coating does when you use the knife?
Do you think that finish would make for a good EDC blade?

I have mirror polished baldes that I use every day and for me they are the easiest finish to restore

Coatings wear off

Stone wash has no way to be retouched up unless you stone wash the blade again

A buffing wheel and some skill and you can bring back a mirror polish easily

I am very suprised that the knife was dull

Was it used

Tony is wicked at sharpening so that is why I am suprised

Btw I EDCd a Marfione Custom for a few years with out any issue

Double vapor blast is similar to bead blast right? Not like stonewash though..

I was thinking its more of a dark flat grey color.

It was new.
But that particular knife was made 08/12
It's been a while. I looked it over very closely and can tell it hasn't been used though. It was mint! Just crazy dull. I'm sure sending it out for sharpening wouldn't be to much of a hassle. I just don't like the idea if shipping out my brand new knife as soon as I get it. Esp with the high cost of that particular knife.

Understandable

this is like one of the saddest threads of all time lol :)

It is bead blast....a very beautiful, very delicate and prone-to-rust bead blast. Oil it up good and keep it dry.

Joe is right that mirror maybe the easiest to maintain, satin being one as well, due to Microtech using a belt satin finish that can clean up with a Scotchbrite pad....BUT....I maintain that the way Tony does his high polish finish is just not as simple as walking up to a buffer and having at it. On a normal mirror polish, this would mostly not be the case, and you could just buff, buff, buff your miseries away.

Do you think some Tuff glide on a microfiber cloth would work well to keep that blade from rusting?

Either that OR benchmade Blue lube. I was thinking about buying both of them.

I heard that Tuff glide is better for oiling blades. Pivots require an oil that will last longer and not dry up so fast... I am still looking for a good pivot lube. But for now I have tuff glide so I use that on everything for the time being.

My biggest concern is the double vapor blast wearing off like the DLC coatings do over time. I want to be able to use this knife.

Do you guys think a bead blast, or double vapor blast will hold up to abuse better than DLC?

Tuff Glide works great, we sell it, I use it.

Bead blast holds up like crap in hard use, it's primary benefit is the non-reflectiveness....and it looks beautiful when new...it shows scuffs worse than just about anything. DLC is much more durable, but virtually impossible to re-finish at home.

Damn. Well it looks like I'll be on the market for a black matrix now. If I ever get a chance to buy a casadium matrix id buy it right away also.

I really wanted to use that vapor blast matrix I ordered.. Can you tell me any good news about using that blade? Lol
Like if I do scratch the blade, is it satin underneath? How bad will scratches show?

And do you think its possible to send it out to microtech to get re-vapor blasted?? That would be great if I could just pay microtech yo sharpen and re-blast it once i use it.

The scratches will show horrible...it is belt satin underneath, but a coarser finish, and you don't want to reveal it.

I don't know who you are, but I do have to be honest....you can get your knife serviced at Microtech, but it will probably take 3 MONTHS for them to turn it around....I love those folks, but they have terrible customer service....no other way to put it....this is based upon my last experience where a customer sent in a knife for sharpening(same problem as you had, it arrived out of the box dull) in January and he got it back in April....he paid $700.00 for this knife.

^^ Thank you for the honest answer. I do appreciate it very much.

I did return the mirror finish socom delta, and I just ordered a mini matrix custom. I also paid about $700 for this knife. I hope this one comes sharp at least so I can use it. If it is dull like the last one than I will return it right away.

BUT if I do decide to keep it..

Even if it takes 3 months to service my blade. Do you think they would even offer to re blast the custom knife?
I just want to know if I will ever be able to get it looking as good as new again once I decide to make it a carry knife. Obviously scuffs will be inevitable if choose to go down that path.

I'm sure if you are willing to wait, and pay the reasonable price for servicing, you will get your knife back sharp and as blemish free as possible....they are slow....but meticulous, in general. When a Microtech knife is done right, you cannot buy a better production or custom auto.
