I just received a marine medical corps bolo machete from a friend of mine. would this bolo be good for general survival use, or should I relegate it to the souviner shelf? It is in decent condition, and I like the feel of it.

mine has had the handle reshaped a bit and lacks a sheath.......how would this effect the value

Appears absolutly worthless, send it to me.:D :D

IMO if I can't use it I don't want it. That being said, I love the old stuff because it just seems to me that all the "bugs" are out of it,so to speak, and I feel more confident in the steel. Ya, I know they still make good steel now if not better, but for me it's kinda like having Granpas old knife, just seems better.;)

To me the value is in it's use.

i appreciate the views. I have been reading this board for a litttle over two years and this is my first post. I have learned so much from the people here. thanks!:D

I have one, been in my family so long no one remembers where it came from. My Dad gave it to me when I was in high school, since then it has cut a lot of firewood. While I was in the Army it rode on the side of my rucksack and cleared a lot of firing lane etc. It now resides in my truck.
I have reshaped the stock a bit and thined down the edge and consider it a valuable user.
As far as value I have seen them at gun shows periodicly and they run about a hundred bucks in fair condition with sheath.

A sheath in good condition for one of these is more rare than the knife in good condition.

Pretty heavy. As heavy as the heaviest 18" khukuri I have. For the weight, you could carry a whole collection of tools.

It's a decent work knife, but I suspect it is worth more as a collector, even if it is in mediocre shape. I like having that old stuff arounf. I know how POed I was when I lost my WW-II British bolo when it fell off the tractor, somewhere.

Dad had one when I was growin up. We used it all the time camping to split firewood. Phenominal chopper.

Mom sold a box of stuff at a garage sale that wasn't supposed to be sold, and it was in it...:grumpy: :grumpy:

Man, I miss that pup.

I still look for them at shows, but haven't seen knife/sheath combo yet, always one or the other, and I just haven't put another set together. Would prefer original set.
