marine spike?

It's primary use is to splice rope and can also be used to undo tight knots.

I carry a Camilus with the Marlin spike. It comes in handy, when I was planking deck, it worked great to pry the decking into place.

Generally used for untying knots and splicing rope etc.. Can also be used for SD purposes if you are that way inclined and are creative enough in it's potential deployment.

I've have a 1951 ABL folder with marlin spike that I carry on my key ring.

According to Ashley ('The Ashley Book Of Knots' by Clifford W. Ashley), the name comes from the 'Marling Spike' used by sailors and riggers who worked the sailing ships.

The thin tip is inserted between strands, and the broad end could be pounded on to force separation of rope strands. Primary use is/was for splicing strands,

The form that we commonly see (I also have the Camillus folder with marlinspike) is a tapered cone, but a version with a flattened tip is/was used for work with steel cables.

Hope this helps!
