Marine Tuf-Cloth on Satin

So I just went ahead and bought a six-pack of marine tuf-cloth, smooth-kote, tuf-glide, and high slip grease for firearms and knives. I know the tuf-cloth can be used in conjunction with white mineral oil, which is already on my busses, but it also says to clean thoroughly before applying tuf-cloth, because it will allow the dry lubricants to impreg. into the steel, do i need to wipe the mineral oil off of the satin first or just go to town the way they are? Also, i was having a hard time discerning the difference between smooth-kote and tuf-glide, and which to use on satin, with tuf-cloths, and on what parts of a pistol or rifle (inner-slide, outer coating, etc.) any one care to drop some knowledge on me? much appreciated. Also, will the tuf-cloth make microscratches on the satin? I would like to keep my grail safe queens as shiny as possible, thanks to all for advice.

I would wipe the mineral oil off before using the Tuff cloths .... it says the metal needs to be clean for them to work .... but they do dry out ... so keep them in the sachets and then in a small plastic bag ....

ok sounds good, so do you add mineral oil to them once the tuf-cloths dry out over time?

No I have'nt done that but others may have .... personally I have just used them until worn out and then bought replacements ....

Bro, I have used 100% natural mineral oil on SR-77, SR-101, and INFI, and I have never had a rust problem (and I live on official marsh land)! I like mineral oil cause you can coat the blade, and the mineral oil will not rub off unless you come in contact with the area in which you have applied the oil. Although WD-40 is a common and inexpensive lubricant and rust protectant (is that a word?), I find that WD-40 will just drip off over time. It is also cheap as hell; $3.00 for a big jar. I haven't used any of the synthetics, but I just thought I would throw in my 2cents!

cool thanks man , my rationale was that maybe i could coat the tuf-cloth on handle areas where infi is not usually re-oiled that often, and on the blade, then put some mineral oil on top so that if i accidentally touch the blade and forget to re-oil, the tuf-cloth might give an extra level of protection, sometimes when i am having some drinks and looking at the collection ill forget to re-oil and i am afraid to forget, let it sit too long, and pull the blade out of the cardboard someday with a rust spot on it, that would ruin my week on a safe queen. thanks for the advice man. I found a company out of houston called ste oil that charges $18 per gallon for white mineral oil. it seems like a good price, how much are the jars you get ?

Clean the blade with rubbing alcohol and then apply Tuf-cloth or Marine tuf-cloth and hang dry the knife if possible.

I've never had a issue with a tuf-cloth scratching anything and wouldn't hesitate to use it on any knife.

On a standard tuf-cloth I'll put a few drops of tuf-glide in the bag every once in a while to keep it moist. When the marine cloth gets dried out and full of holes I get a new one.

Hope it helps.

You add mineral spirits after the cloths dry out not mineral oil. I keep mineral oil on all of my rust prone knives. I used the tuf cloth for awhile but it is not edible. Mineral oil is. I always leave open the chance that I might use a knife for food prep or a mistress for use as a steak knife. :D

Shows what I know, i do not know the difference between mineral oil and mineral spirits, about to do some research, thanks for the info to everyone

cool, now i know what i am going to slip in someone's food or drink if they ever wrong me, couple teaspoons of min oil, thanks again

Ok,,,,so let me make sure I got this right,,,,you're saying that you are mixing your Infi and your Alchohol,,,is that correct???,,,, well at least you are in with the right crowd :thumbup: :p

LOL! No worries man! Mineral oil also makes an excellent laxative. If you ever need to "unclog the pipes," just take a few shots and you will be good to go :p

I'm just picturing Jim carrey in dumb and dumber laughing in the turbolax scene, I think I mess with the knives more the more I drink lol, takes the "edge off"

Try your local feed store, they sell mineral oil by the gallon pretty cheap; it is used as a laxitive for horses.

I usually decant (joking) it into smaller plastic squeeze bottles and distribute them to gun, tool, knife areas.

Just make sure if you use something toxic, you clean it off before using the knife on food.

I have never put any type of oil on my infi when stored, and have not had a rust problem.

I have seen satin develop some spots or patina, but only pics from people living in high rust areas.
