Hi Guys, just been browsing here to see what people are doing with the Kydex.
I would like to have a go myself so I wanted some ideas as well as hopefully some advice.
Your sheaths are truly works of art, both of you. I didn't get to checking out everybodys sheaths, there are undoubtedly other guys too but I just had to give the 2 of you kudos.:thumbup:

Do you find there are more people going for Kydex as opposed to leather? I don't want to trigger a stormy comparison debate here, not at all, I am simply asking your personal opinions and experiences as this is undoubtedly a matter of personal taste.
Keep up the art.
Mike

From all my years of watching the forums, a few various sheath related, I'd say no. Leather, Kydex, and Nylon all have their fans and none seem to have any lead on the others. Especially in the custom market.

The reason you see more kydex and plastic in general on production knives is because its less expensive to produce, and faster to make in large quantities.

leatherman, thanks for your input. I just went to look at your work, your name suggests that you make the other type ;)
Your sheaths are also beautiful, very neat and well made.

Kydex is an art form? That's a new one...................just kiddin.....

Thanks. I feel awkward being named by name when there are so many people who could be, but I appreciate the props.

Dwayne is correct. Some people love one over the other and it's pretty much split. Most are like me and like Kydex for certain knives and leather for others.

It can be. Most people have their own style and you can usually tell who made a sheath by how it looks. That personal aspect put into the work. Of course there are Kydex sheaths that are truly art. Look at some of the sheaths David Brown has carved for instance.

Rayban, I was referring to the quality of workmanship and I think you will agree that it cannot be faulted in this case.
I guess plastic cannot really be in the same league as leather but some folks seem to like it.
Sorry if I am over reacting, you gents may know each other personally for all I know.

I just went to look at your leather work BTW and it is awesome too but I am sure the time it takes to make a leather sheath like you do and relatively to that, the price that would have to be charged just puts it out of reach for some.
Anyway, as I stated before, I didn't start this thread to cause a storm, you guys are all artists.

Thank you! :D

Actually I do make armor on occasion. :) Its how I got started in leather craft in a serious way. I made my own armor for SCA heavy combat. Got tired of constant bruises and started making knife sheaths. ;) Much more peaceful.

Dont worry about ol Rayban there, his sense of humor is, er, for lack of a better word "interesting" :p

Holy Crap! I thought I'd deleted the pic of my private "fighting" armor!!! :o apparently not. :p
hmmmm...apparently, yours is too.......
There's that sterling sense of humor again! I think, it doesn't make sense, but its, er, funny. :D

How much for a suit like that leatherman?:D
Only kidding, really!
For the paltry sum of 5000.00 it can be yours! But,
Its the custom fitting that gets rather, how can I put this, personal? :p

Hmm, I get the...point! ;)

If this is your suit then you are a man who does not lead with the jaw.:p
I hope it comes with a good sized shield too.;)

Yeah, I figured the pic on the mannequin would be best. The in use pics might be a little much for S&S. :D

..................yeah, i giggled a bit....................maybe not for the right reason.........................but still.......................................................................................................................................................................

On a more OP related note. Miden, if you need any advice on any issues you run into just let me know. I'll help as best I can, brother.

Thanks for the mention! Sorry it took me so long to get into this thread, but I have been trying to catch up with my customers, after having been gored by the swine flu. I am barely running fast enough to dodge the dreaded GBU!

There are guys who I can't hold a candle to, but they don't promote as much as I do, so you don't see much of them. Mike of River City Sheaths sells a DVD.... http://www.rivercitysheaths.com/dvd.html

Kiah is much better at all of these things, and so all questions should be referred to him. : )

Kind Regards,
Marion

:D :D :D Its all in good fun, if I cant poke fun at myself I cant really justify poking fun at anyone else. :)

Marion, not a problem. Customers first and sorry you had the swine flu.

Thanks for the heads up regarding Mike of River City, yes, his sheaths are amazing.
As I said before, you are all artists in your own right...and humble.

Leatherman, I never took it as anything but fun:D and we all need a bit of that in our lives.

Thanks again guys and take care, see you around here.
