My first was a "rostfrei". Both my mom and dad encorage it I've even tought my mom the basics the only one that objects is my girlfriend who won't let me mess with one (balisong that is) around her.

Same here, my girlfriend is not too receptive to my butterfly and other knives. Almost everytime we lie together on the couch watching a movie, I like to tinker with my 42, doing exercises or finger rolls. And she usually gives me an ultimatum: either I lie with her or the 42

I think my very first bali was some cheapy I got at a gunshow around the early eighties. I remember spending something like $40, so it might have been a PC international.

My first was a China cheapie that we persuaded some drunk to get for us at a liquor store after sneaking out of a Boy Scout meeting.

The latch soon fell off, and I beautified the safe handle with a hacksaw so I could tell the difference.

It lasted a while, but now it's sitting on my desk in front of me, with a broken handle.

My parents aren't very enthusiastic about it, but they see some good in it.

never had one lost or stolen. my first one was this crappy 5" one with black skeletonized handles. it was obviously used before I got it (I got it at a flea market) but the pins on it were great.
my second was a silver rostefrei, my third another rostefrei with a flame blade, my fourth was a jag with black overlays, and my fifth and sixth are BM42's.

my parents are cool with them and no-one else I know really opposes them (but my best friend wonders why I carry them)

Fortunately, I still own every single balisong that I have ever purchased.

My first love was an old Frost Cutlery silver Dragon handled (weighs a ton) butterfly knife. It's barely intact but I still have it as a keep sake. This is the knife that caused me partial paralasis in the knuckle of my index finger on my left hand. (I'm left handed) Guess I should have stopped using it when the latch broke.

Needless to say that was along time ago and that cheap old Frost was what started my long term passion for these unique tools.

Best regards,

My first was this the 4" bladed rostfrei dragon butterfly. I got it when I was 14 and my dad wasnt to happy about it but he allowed it. Now it sits in the old case with a nail replacing the old pin. Never had any stolen or confiscated though.

Things may never get better, but they can always get worse.

My first was purchased at a surplus store in san francisco when i was uhm.. 13 I guess. 6 years ago. $20 and it was slim and the blade could not hold an edge at all. At that time I didn't think there was that much to a balisong. I then found this site and the balisong forum and it opened up a new world so to speak. Now I have a Jaguar, waiting for my BM 42. I'll probably receive it while I'm in marine basic training up on the island hehe.

Oh yeah, as for that first balisong, it was confiscated by my parents when i was 14 or so. go figure.

My first is a black Korean Kamikaze (you can see the pics on Advanced Balisong Manual, Jeff Imada). 15 years ago or so .. (phewh, didn't realize it was so long ago)

The handle broke, so I got some workshop milling brass handle for me. It is now sitting in my keep and seldom use it anymore. I broke the latch about 7 years ago ..

I never got any confiscated or stolen or lost, but I gave away lots of rostfrei (dragon handle and wave handle) during my parting from college .. Now I can't seem to find anyone importing them again and keep my two last rostfrei as hard as I can.

I had quite a few taken by the local police dept. years ago. That's just the nature of the beast here in NJ.

As for my first......... It was a definite china cheapie that I bought at a Harley dealer. Man I loved that thing! Beat the crap out of it. It ended up "buying the farm" when it got caught in a press at my job about a year later. Better that than my fingers, right?

My parents think I'm nuts, my girlfriend thinks I'm nuts (but in a good way), and everyone else seems to like what I can do with them. I guess you can't please everyone.

getting 'em open

My brother and I simultaneously and _independently_ decided to get each other a Bali. I took a trip down to the BM factory and lucked out on my way back. The knife store in Oregon just got their shipment in, so I picked up a couple of 42s's while everyone was still waiting

. My brother's Jags came in a few weeks later.

My mom threatened to confiscate mine but only because she used to collect knives too. When I'm practicing, my cats just look at me with disdain, but then they always look at me like that.

My first balisong was an fhm, of course
smile.gif
, which i forced my father to buy for me in a trade exhibit. This was 20 years ago. Eventually it got lost, since my mom hides it whenever she sees it lying around in my room.

Nowadays i only get yelled by my wife when i play with my bali near her, especially when i once dropped the bali a couple of inches from her foot.

I have never had a bali lost, confiscated or stolen. Although I did get pulled over the other night and I had a 42 in my trunk. He wrote me the ticket and sent me on my way though.

If you click here you can see pics and a story about the first balisong I ever purchased. I wanted one for a LONG time, but since I live in CA, they were not easy to come by. I had the bali for years, I am so surprised it lasted that long, and wanted to get a quality bali, but did not know where to go.

My girlfriend at the time when I purchased the bali did NOT like them at all. In fact, she forbid me to handle it when she was home.

My current girlfriend is cool with them though. She even asked me to teach her how to flip them when we first started going out. She prefers the 42 over all the others and even said she wants a 42a!

Sheesh.. when I was 14 it was extremely easy for me to purchase one. I just walked up to the surplus store, counter asked to see them, and then purchased one. The guy just said that it was illegal to have them in public but it was fine to keep at home

I was lucky enough to come by a Bali-Song USA custom in an original Cocoon sheath about 15 or so years ago and have had the bug ever since! It has a utility blade with burgandy/black striped micarta inserts and a special place in the collection as the first of many!

My first bali came from the Philippines when I was out there visiting family...I think it was 1987. I have had several over the years, handmade in Batangus, a couple of the Gutman series that came in a wooden box that were made in the PI (Philippine Islands), some Rosts and Jags. I sold a lot of mine and gave some of them as gifts. I currently have a BM 42 which is almost becoming a daily carry and a couple of the ones from the PI.
Yes, I have had some confiscated, the one that really irks me is the one that got taken when I was sixteen. It was really sweet, one from PI, that had a 5 1/2" blade that had 1/4" of the top sharpened. A really pointy double edge blade with elk antler handle slabs.
As far as my family is concerned, I taught my mom how to swing one. They don't care cause it's part of our heritage.

I had a cheapie taken from me in High School from my football coach. As for my first Bali, it was a Valor camo. My mom and dad bought it for me in Memphis, TN when I was eleven or twelve. They have always contributed to my knife collection while away on trips.

My first was a BM 30, with rainbow colored aftermarket oxidation, and the number 194/200 on the blade...it was STOLEN!!!! so keep your eye's open for me!
