I got a request to mark the blade of a bowie thats close to delivery with the prospective owner's name(replacing my own).Has anyone run into this? What did you do?

Either etch it in or take it to an engraver (Trophy and jewelery type) and have then put it on for a couple of bucks.

Tell them 'no'. As someone said above, put your mark on it and tell them you can have it engraved with their name, or etched with their name in addition to your maker's mark.
Something like 'made for XXX by XXX maker' should work fine.

Contrary to popular opinion, the customer isn't always 'right', IMHO.

My wife had a customer come in the shop one day and he looked over my case . he see my Name on them and asked if they were for sale..
the wife said yes.. he said but they all had gray on them??
and also said only guys named Gray would want to buy them

it took a while for the wife to explain it to him,,
as you would expect by then. :D

put you're mark on where you normally do..
and just tell him, that's the way it is, it's your advertisement and part of the package. most guys understand that.. the others will in time, when they can't buy a good blade without the makers name,, Wal-Mart?? K mart, :D

I'd be damned if I let someone else pawn off all my hard work as their own

...well ok maybe for like double or triple the asking price!! :D :D

No way would I not put my mark on a knife. If the guy wants his name on there too, charge him extra. Randall Made offers this to it's customers as an option but you'll damn sure still see Randall Made on their knives.
BTW, welcome to BF. ;)

I'm doing one of these now. I told him my name would be on the front as always but I would put his on the back if he wanted for an extra charge.

I imagine it makes it awful difficult for a customer to resell the knife if it has their name scrawled all over it ...unless their name is, like, Daniel Boone or something :)

The request was for just his name on it,but as the concensus shows,I'll be "damned" to let someone take possible credit for my work.I agree with you all and appreciate your input. I'll offer an alternative and still keep my logo on the tang. Thanks.

I get lots of requests by buyers to put their name or something special on a made to order blade.

I had a customer order 9 knives to give away as Christmas gifts last year. I put "Christmas, 2004" on the opposite side from my mark and he paid for having the stencil made. No problem.

If someone asks for a special mark, I add the cost of the stencil to their price.

Charge for the stencil and put their mark on the opposite side of the blade from your mark.

I wouln't have a problem with "shared billing"...but the request was for" just "his name on the knife. No other marks, just his. I'm not making heirloom pieces but I have a little pride in my work.
