Found a Collins Hudson Bay at a Junk shop in Nisswa, MN. Got a good deal.
It has a bunch of scratches marked out on the handle for about 16".
There is like 4-5 rows of these, starting at Fawns Foot. I can only guess they signify trees cut or fires started ? Ever seen this before. I will post photo

Could be a scale of some type like tree diameter Biltmore scale. Pics would help.

You found Lizzie Borden's axe. One scratch for each whack.

Do they actually line up with the markings on a ruler? Like he used the handle for quick measurements? If not, I'm liking the Biltmore Stick theory suggested above.

I bet it's a crab gauge...

Probably not :) but now I want to see a picture

Here you are:

Are the marks on your axe handle caused by underbucking with a crosscut saw? As above, pictures sure would help.
But I'm not going to lose any sleep over marks you can't explain on your axe.

The bar on my chainsaw is 16 inch. The exact length of a firewood round. I use this as a 'eye-ball' marker for making crosscuts. I suppose a fellow a half century earlier could have scribed the handle on his chopping axe to do much the same thing, except that he also had to take into account the width of the "V" notches (based on log diameter) that he used to arrive at this finished number.
