I need to make a great quality Marlin spike about 5-6".
Anybody know what the top end ones are made of?
What RC do I need?
Is 1/4" thick material big enough for heavy duty use?

I was in the Navy and worked with alot of Bosn's mate's. Their spike's where rather long. I'd say anywhere from 6 to 7 1/2 inches. The base was around 3/4 of an inch and knobbed tapering up to a blunt tip smaller than a quarter of an inch. I would say the tip is dependant upon what kind of line your trying to work.

Robert, if this is intended for half inch or so rope, 1/4" stock should be fine. I never thought about heat treating, the couple I've made were left annealed and work fine. If you want to HT I'd say a spring temper should be right.

You know it's funny, but I haven't kept either of the ones I've made and find I want one all the time. I'm just going to have to move that up on my personal "do it" list. If you work with lanyards or any other reason for cord, just make one for yourself while you're doing this one; you'll be glad you did. :)
