Hello all,

i had a great time this weekend at a 2 day silat suffian bela diri seminar, with maul mornie in nyc,
and i was wondering, how many you knife nuts train "martial blade craft" ... (insert dramatic music here)

got a chance to check out a benchmade 551 griptilian trainer, which was pretty cool.
and i'd totally love to get one, but it kills me to have to pay the same amount for a trainer. ($70)
that's a load of crap!

Get two Voyagers and turn one into a trainer - $76 for both and a better handle design and build. I train and practice with some family members here in Ohio and have been doing it on and off since '95 or '96.

i understand how u feel. how about electrical tape on the blade. assuming u dont need to open or close it i would think it would be fine.

i think the true benefit of using a specific trainer knife would be for "ultimate reality scenario training"... (insert heavy reverb)
where you would start with the folder in your pocket. maybe not even tell the guy you have it, and just pull it on him as a wake up call.
(how great would that be in a bjj class? lol)
i think i might be a little reluctant to have my trainer repeatedly getting dropped on the floor from disarms.

* i think electrical tape on the blade would be way too dangerous to safely use in a training situation.
may be okay for butterfly knife flipping practice, but not when you're slashing and stabbing at someone.

bubba:
do you grind down your blade and point?

zenpeach, I have used a dremel to do it with other knives in the past but don't even have the spare $38 for another Large Voyager right now (wife is boss). I have some wooden knives I've made and some rubber training knives currently.

I've been doing experiments with the vaquero blade shape, the first one I bought went to another family member. I think the Voyagers are hands down better than the Griptilians even though less than half the price - overall design and the fit & finish. Will probably try a clip point model also and then get a 3rd Voyager to blunt and buddy train with.

I dont really get into any "martial blade craft". I did used to fence a little if that counts. I have just always looked as knives as tools and not as weapons so it would just be a little bit weird for me.

Same lock, same handle materials, same blade materials, same heat-treat and as much or more machining. Why would you expect the trainer to be cheaper?

this.

and there really is no substitute for training with a training blade that imitates the one you use on a regular basis

actually, the training blade is made of plain old 440, i don't know if they heat treat it or not, i don't see why they would have to, and the blade is flat... it's just punched/cnc'd out.

- i do have a 551 grip, but i rotate my daily carry.

- the knives i carry are usually small to medium sized utility knives, used for light everyday tasks, because i just enjoy sharp shiny cutty things.
i am not really into tactical knives, though i do have an emerson commander that was one of the first knives i ever bought, just because i dug the wave feature. i don't really like it though, and i never carry it. i was just younger then.

so, i too think of knives as tools, but in the event of a life and death situation, is it still not a tool to be used?

i'm not the paranoid type who walks around armed to the teeth going to the supermarket.
a knife is just something i carry all the time everywhere because of it's usefulness.
it's usually something small, like a chive, scallion, ladybug, or dragonfly.
some days maybe it's even something as large as a delica, griptilian, or an endura.
sometimes it's a sak, or a leatherman.

none of those are specifically designed to be used as weapons.
personally, if i had to use a knife as a weapon; being a civilian, not in a time of war,
i would probably prefer to use a cheap 440 china throw away knife.
flesh is not that tough, and it's not like i'd be fighting an army single handedly.
i don't know that i'd want to keep and carry a knife that i had used to harm someone else,
even in self defense.
