Something in the back of my mind tells me that I need one of these: a Martin Knives BT Special :)

It is the longer version of the BT (4 3/4" blade), and I think, IMHO, that it is a little bit better balanced (design/estetical) than the normal BT.

First of all I'd like to know if anyone here has got one and what are your opinions about it.

Then, I still haven't made up my mind about the steel. For the BT special 3 different steels are offered:
1095: classical HC steel, which they harden at around 60HRC
O-1: tool steel, which they harden at around 59-60HRC.
S30V: hard stainless steel, which they harden at around 58-59HRC, in order to make it easier to resharpen

Theoretically I ordered these three steels in increasing order of edge retention and cutting ability and decreasing order of sharpening ease.

Considering that:
- I will not be using the knife day and night every week, but it will be more like once in a while during a 1-day or 2 days hike/adventure
- on the other hand I'd like the knife NOT to be a PIA to sharpen

what are you suggesting me? Price of different steels is not a decision factor (it is irrelevant, cause at worst I'm spending 40$ more on a 300$-based knife).

thanks everybody!

mmm still nothing?

or just maybe the real answer is that any steel will do the job...

I should have this knife in my mail box in a week or so. I went with S30V because I like the edge holding ability. I will try to post something after I use it to let you know. I also went with the steel hilt. Awesome looking knife and can't wait to get it.

Troller. You should have the mods move this thread toeither the General section or the W&SS forum.

On W&SS there are quite a few folks with experience with either this knife or similar knives.

From What I have read in the past it is a durable well made piece which performs well depending on the skill level of the user. If it were me I would probably go with the o-1 though if you wanted stainless the S30V is an excellent steel.
