Martin, Polzien, Hartsfield???

I am kind of in the market for a japanese influenced short blade or neck knife.

I have looked at some of the above makers knives and seen some stuff that i like.

Does anyone have any opinions they want to share about these makers' knives and/or have any other suggestions.

And if anyone has pics that would be even better.

Thanks - Eric.

Joker -

I don't have any knives to sell you. But, since your post appeared to ask for opinions not hardware, I do have some of those. I've owned many Polziens, and a couple of Martins, and that is the basis for my opinions. Polzien knives are gorgeous and extremely functional, coming from a maker who probably has the most impressive background and skill set for Japanese blades of this group, hands down. Martin knives will be at least as sharp as any of this group, made with great technical skill. Hartsfield knives will cost much much more than the others with little quantitative or qualitative reason for it (and if not the original buyer, without warranty).

Functionally, you will not be disappointed by any of these knives. If you want pure user, Martin may be a hair ahead; if you want esthetics, Polzien is in the lead; and, if you want a 'name' that costs more, Phill is the guy. Anything you buy from the guys listed above me will be worthwhile, too, as they are all great guys to deal with (I've bought from each. I can't say which I'd call first because I continue to buy from them all and I don't want them to feel slighted!) Good luck & enjoy your knife.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far.

jbravo... thank you for your comments. I have handled knives from all of the makers you mentioned at shows, but as you know, nothing like owning one. Your opinion should prove very helpful for me in the near future.

Wouldn't it be nice if I could just get them all?

Oh well... Keep 'em coming...

Thanks - Eric.

I am going to throw a couple more names into the hat, Wally Hayes and Wayne Watanabe. Both of these makers fit the catagory you have mentioned.

Ken

Ken,

I'll have to say that I have never heard of these two yet. Do you have any leads on where I can see some of there work?

Thanks - Eric.

BladeArt has some knives from Hayes check out Steve Corkum while you are there. I can take a picture of my Watanabe to give you an idea, from my understanding Wayne makes about 17 different models with quite a selection of steels too, I have not seen him lately but he is located in Southern Ca.

Don't overlook Don Fogg, he's one of the best Japanese influenced makers around IMO. Click here to take a peek.

I agree with JBRAVO on this one.
I own Kozukas from Martin and Hartsfield, and think the only difference is in the name (and price!). If you're looking for a user, Martin is the way to go.

I have several Hartsfields and love Phill's knives. One of them is my daily carry knife. They feel really good to hold, cut like crazy, and hold an edge forever. People in my martial arts group who have done heavy duty cutting with knives and swords say that nothing cuts like a Hartsfield.

Dave... Unfortunately money does play a role on my decision, but I would still like to see some of Scott Slobodian's work. Mabe you can point me in the right direction.

Yitz... OF your Hartsfield collection, what's your favorite and what do you carry (if different)? Got any pics?

Thanks - Eric.

Sorry, I'm not yet technically advanced enough to post pics. The knife I carry was one I custom designed. It's a keychain model with a 4" blade that is double edge and double ground so that it is symetrical and comes out of the sheath always sharp side up. It also goes into the sheath either way and so is easier to replace. The blade is 1/16" thick and so is very light and very, very sharp. The end of the sheath has a string that ties to my belt loop so I can draw it quickly with one hand. (It also makes it very easy to access my keys.) My favorite one is probably the "self-portrait" which has a 5" blade that is 3/8" thick and has a hamon, and also comes with a small companion knife. It's really a handfull.
