Some examples of the "Technical Sheath" I'd like to show.
These are modular sheaths that sport halftanned leather outers and a removable kydex liner.
The sheath has a drainage hole and some have a retentionstrap.
Most have a (removable) kydex backplate with a droploop, but some have an integral droploop. The removable droploop could be replaced by a teklok. The teklok also fits directly onto the body of the sheath. They have a firesteel loop and 2 horizontal straps.
Enjoy the pics.

I have one of Mr. Swinkels' sheaths for my NMSFNOLE. It is a work of highly functional art.

Great rigs Martin.

What is crazy about your sheaths - is that they are brand new but look like they have been worn for years. Best of both worlds in my opinion.

Those Andrew Jordan knives are some of the best looking knives I've ever seen, and served as the inspiration for getting me into knife making. You sheaths really compliment his knives, so much so that I can't imagine his work without yours in tow. I love how you are able to blend kydex and leather together seamlessly and give it that aged look while maintaining the modern functionality. Very "Steampunk", in my opinion.

What do you mean by "halftanned" leather? How do you get that aged look without sacrificing the integrity of the leather?

We're going to have to talk about you making a sheath for me. I don't have a Jordan knife, but I don't think I'd mind shipping my knife to you if it meant getting it back similarly dressed!

Thank you for the kind words gents. It's much appreciated.

Halftanned leather has a core of rawhide. Therefore it's harder to cut or puncture then veggie tanned leather. It also keeps it's shape better. It has the feel of hard and stiff veggie tanned leather.

It's much harder to work with, and really needs to be forced in shape, and therefore you'll find toolmarks, little dents, scuffs etc. all over my sheaths. This in combination with the dye and finishing gives the aged look. Gotta stop dying before it's all finished even.

If you ever order a knife from Andrew, just mention me, and we'll get it sorted out without you having to send the knife over. Andrew's shop is pretty nearby, and I visit him quite regularly..
We'll do it all at once then, Knife + sheath..

Cheers all,
Martin

Would you mind PM'ing me on a price for a sheath for a RAT 3 similar to the one on this thread? Or if you have link on this forum where you sell your sheaths.

Thanks

I never get tired of seeing your stuff, Martin.

I actually tried doing a kydex-lined sheath for a Bravo-1, but my leather and kydex are both way too thick for what I was wanting. I've given up for now until I can get my hands on some more suitable materials.

Is half-tanned leather simply a European thing? I've never heard of it until I ran across your stuff. It sounds like a perfect material for sheathmaking.

If you ever order a knife from Andrew...

Martin, if I could afford a Jordan knife, I'd be in high cotton indeed!!! Those things must be high, especially with the weak dollar right now. :(

Still, I have to wonder if your Rat 3 sheath would fit the knife I just finished making with just a bit of heat to reshape the lip of the kydex liner. I'm really curious how close the measurements are....

Partial rawhide still in the dermis? I've never heard of such a thing Stateside. I wonder how they stop the tanning process before the entire skin is done. Maybe they simply pull it out of the chemical bath and neutralize the acids before they can do their job entirely. I know when I was brain-tanning deer skins I could vary how soft or stiff the skins were by varying how much brain slurry they were exposed to and how much I worked them while they were drying.

Do you happen to have a link to a dealer or such that might explain it more, or offer it for sale?

Martin , wonderful sheaths. They look very well made and sturdy !

I have searched and searched , can you please post a pic somewhere of just the Andrew Jordan small Scout knife ? I love the looks of the handle in the seath and am dying to know what the rest of the knife looks like.

Thank you in advance.

Wow... Thank you so much for going out of your way to post that. That is one impressive looking knife to me , I love the whole thing.
You did a great job on the sheath , it matches the character of the knife perfectly.

Well done :)
