Hello all, I am David from Pennsylvania. 51,been collecting knives for several years. I just recently came upon a knife I've never seen before but see it has been discussed on here a few times. The Marto Brewer survival knife. I have a few questions. I noticed there are different markings on the tang. I've seen " Marto Spain, pat pend," with either EE and then serial number or just 1 E and then the serial number. I just bought one but this one says Marto Brewer, Pat Pend ,and has EE 5464 . Every Marto knife I've seen all look different. The one I have I haven't seen before. Can anyone give me or tell me where I can find more information on these knives and the types. I don't really care about the value, I'm just interested in collecting these and just want to know more about them and why mine has full name but no Spain on it and all others have Marto Spain, pat pend. And why E ,and EE. Thank you - David

You might try contacting - https://www.martoswordstoledo.com/contact or https://www.southernswords.co.uk/ , and see if they have a contract for Marto / D and D Toledo. They are both major distributors for the line.

I haven't seen the serial number thing discussed, but I suspect it might have to do with colors and sizes. For a while they were trying to keep the smaller silver versions "civilian" and the larger version was marketed as "military". After a certain point they ditched the idea, and you could get either color in both sizes.

Ok, thank you, I will check this out now. Mine is larger, stainless steel with the EE serial number. Trying to find out which were military and which were for civilians. Thanks again.

What are the differences in length between larger and smaller?

Originally the silvers were 5 1/2" blades, the black versions were 6 1/2". After a certain point, they stopped with the color code, and you could get both in either blade length.

From observation the easiest to get are the 6 1/2" black, 5 1/2" silver, 6 1/2" silver, 5 1/2" black. I've only seen a handful of that last one.

There is an old knife book called El Cuchillo Tactico by Abel Domenech that has a chapter on these knives. Mr. Brewer was a naturalist and explorer in Venezuela and the knife was named after him. It was a good quality survival knife. The book is in Spanish, but was originally released with apended notes in English.

There are three Marto bayonets. One was made for the u.s. trials, which adopted the m9. One was for the Venezuelan military, along with a standard military issued one. And one was made as a commercial. They are all very scarce.

In regards to serial numbers on Marto knives. The Venezuelan bayonet and the Venezuelan military standard Marto have serial numbers beginning with the letter E. This may stand for the Spanish word for army , ejercito, as a few other Spanish speaking countries such as Chilie start the serial numbers on their military army knives with an E which stands for army ,ejercito.

To GIRLYmann.
I am new to the forum and this is the first time I saw your photos.
Very impressive, l learned something new.

I just came across my old Marto Brewer Explora Survival Knife. EE-9026. It's mostly been in storage for decades. My dad, who worked at the Navy Seal Base at Coronado Island gave it to me, I believe in the late 80's. I forget exactly. I was pretty young, and I don't know how long he had it previously when I got it.
