I have heard good things about Mora knives as utility fixed blades. First off I was just looking for some feedback on them. What makes them a particularly good all around utility knife?

Second I have seen some Marttiini knives that look similar in design to the Frosts knives, but perhaps a bit prettier (not that it matters for a utility knife). How do these compare?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

The thing that makes Moras good is the price, or lack of it. They're absurdly cheap. They use good steel, and have reasonable design, making them effective at what knives are supposed to do - cut things.

Marttiini in general will not be as cheap as Moras but will come with much better fit and finish. For a beater utility knife I'd go with a Mora, since they're practically free. For a cheap knife for backpacking and woodsy stuff like that I'd be more likely to take one of the better-looking carbon steel Marttiinis.

Whichever you choose, you're getting a decent knife that actually cuts instead of just looking all mean and tactical.

For one thing, the price. At $8-$30 apiece, it's easy to justify buying a few of them for various utility purposes. One for the shop, one for the truck, one for the kitchen, etc.

For general feedback, browse the "Wilderness & Survival Skills" forum section. Tons of reviews, photos, and stories for Mora knives.

It seems many people like the molded plastic handle models. But I prefer the wooden handle knives because of the natural material and full length tangs. If you're interested in the molded handles, there was a long-ago topic where someone posted x-rays of several models showing that some have much more tang than others.

I don't own a Marttiini, but I looked at them one day at AG Russell's showroom. The Marttiini knives are much more finely finished and detailed than the Moras. I'd say the Marttiini knives are on par with Helle.

I also like the Ahti knives, sort of in-between the crudely finished Moras and the more exotic Helle and Marttiini knives.

Best Wishes,
-Bob
