Finally I manage to get from Russia "Chirok", on which I put my eye on 5 years ago. It is made in Nizhni Novgorod from 95x18 which as I understand is similar to 440C - I have 110x18 and it demonstrates pretty good performance. This one steel is step behind, we'll see, but I think it will be OK.

It is folder with line lock and wooden scales. Supplied with thick black leather sheath. Price in Moscow - $44.Weight 4 oz. Total - open 7 1/4", closed 4 1/16".

Blade - 3 3/16" (79mm) wide ~ 1", thick - 3/32". Steel - 95x18 stainless 58-59 HRC. Bead blasted, Hollow grind. No marks or logo on the blade.
Steel composition:
C=0.9-1, Cr=17-19, Si<0.8, Mn<0.8, Ni<0.6, Ti<0.2, Cu<0.3

Initial sharpness out of the box - among top knives - 60g! Same as for Spyderco Military and Microtech Currahhi. There is not too much knives with this level of sharpness out of the box.

There is non round hole in the blade to open with one hand. Movement is very smooth, lock solid, no any blade play or anything like this. Access to the lock is very good and comfortable.

Handle has thick walnut scales. Grip is very solid! Walnut - high quality, no cracks, no scratches, nice wood pattern, nice polished. I just add my usual pipe polish with carnaube - it starts shining right away.

There are no screw wisible on the top of the handle, but I see them inside at least three screw connecting liners, no spacer. Pivot screw is brass I think (yellow metal, probably not gold) - they looks pretty.

handle has lanyard hole - too small on my opinion, it is probably for metal ring more then for lanyard. But I can attach lanyard to metal ring.

to be continued...

To be honest, I get used to poor quality from anything "made in USSR", I am very impressed that "made in Russia" is totally diferrent story. This is top quality folder. It seems like democracy and free market work for real in modern Russia...

With all that quality it is not only good knife but also pretty nice looking - I was enjoying making pictures of it - may be it is my Russian origin play some role, but to me it is just gorgeous!

But I also should note that I get impression that this is real user, practical knife for hunter, outdoorsman etc. It has goo balance, it is light and same time solid with good grip - handle is very comfortable, it feels like good fixed blade actually.

To have idea of its real sizes, I made for you pictures with other similar knives.

See handle thickness - Chirok is bit thicker IMHO, but much lighter:

Chirok - river-swamp small bird with curved beak.

This knife awailable here, but I do not know is it even possible to buy it from outside of Moscow.

Thanks, Vassili.

In addition, as part of Russian exotic I got paperwork stating that after investigation criminal expertise found this knife as not a weapon and so it is considered as a hiking knife allowed to be possessed by civilians. Signed by weapon expert and stamped by proper certification department of police...

Thanks, Vassili.

Nerpa is second knife I got from Russia:

It is all the same steel and wood and lock and quality. It is just bigger knife

Marichev-Nerpa-002.jpg

9 3/8" overall opened - 5 3/8" closed. Blade is 4 1/8", 3/32" thick and 1 5/16" wide.

Initial sharpnes is bit lower then for Chirock - 70g, but still on the top of production models, I know.

Nerpa means in Russian - freshwater seal or small seal.

Both with Chirok they made pretty good practical set.

Here it is with Spyderco Military:

Very nice looking knives indeed. Its hard to see that the Chirok is hollow ground even from your excellent pics but no doubt it is. At .09 thickness they both must be fantastic slicers. Nice score Vassili. I really love the Nerpa.

I widen choil on Chirok - I am able now to put my index finger there.

I also try to make advertisement like photo (I saw one with shoe) - it is lake all view in one page...
