Maryland Balisong Laws?

Under Maryland law (Title 4-101) "penknives without switchblade" are specifically exempted from weapon laws, and are legal to carry.

"Penknife" is not defined per statute, but caselaw has ruled more than once that it is any knife that folds into the handle, not matter how large. That's right, no length limit.

Because MD's switchblade law contains no such mention of "centrifugal force" or "flip of the wrist," it does not consider balisongs to be switchblades.

The upshot? Balisongs are legal in MD.

woohoo! thanks. i read that as well but wasnt quite sure, so i wanted at least one other opinion.

I will tell you from many cop friends and freinds that was in Criminal justice that cops DO NOT LIKE butterfly knives, they are not intended for anything but bodily harm. id think twice about carrying it. However owning one is perfectly legal.
