Maryland state law leaves it up to the officer's own discretion concerning knives; is it or is it not a weapon. This covers regular folders. So, has anyone ever ran into any trouble there carrying knives? I used to live there and never had any problems but a gentleman I worked w/ just ran into a hassle in Annapolis for carrying a BM mini-stryker. He was opening a CD in the parking lot at Tower Records and rec'ed some flak from a couple of officers. Anyone else?

Sounds to me like the fact that he was using it for utility purposes should be proof positive that he was carrying it as a utility knife.

I agree 100%. There view was why do you need it, why are you using it in public, why does it have a "sword blade", etc. They didn't buy the story that he wanted to listen to the CD in his car so he needed to open it. They gave it back in the end but not after detaining him for about a half an hour and searching his car. He's now looking for a more PC "Maryland friendly" pocket knife, like a Spyderco Civilian

As a side note he is a short haired clean cut 39 year old white male who was dressed in Dockers and a collared dress shirt as he just left work. Not that this should matter but in reality it does.
