I'll be in Silversprings, MD for the weekend and plan on a quick trip to the Smithsonian and possibly one other museum. Am I OK in thinking that my SAK Swiss Champ won't be a problem? I usually carry it on my belt, and never had a problem there before, but this my first post 9-11 trip. Any advice most appreciated. Thanks!

MD, ok.

D.C., no go.

All those government buildings, you'd be better off leaving the SAK in the car. That being said, the Smithsonian Natural History Museum does not have metal detector gates (it only has guards with wands), and they don't scan everybody. The Aerospace Museum has metal detector gates, but my SOG mini autoclip got through just fine. Guards weren't paying too much attention.

But with the larger Champ, they might notice something on the screen. So I'd probably just leave it in the car or hide it in bushes.

Air and Space won't let you in if they catch any knife. The limit in Federal buildings is usually 2.5". I usually carry either a Spyderco Navigator or Co-pilot when in D.C.
