Messin' around with some vinegar tryin' to force an even patina for picks when I had an idea, what if I masked off some flame, (a flame :) ) like we did when we used to paint hotrods.

So I found a piece of cellophane and an x-actoknife so I cut the mask out, soaked it in vinegar for 30 minutes and this was the result, I think I may be onto somethin'here :)

Ya could probably take any adhesive backed decal and use irt as a mask, maybe a nice spider web, a star burst or even Steal Your Face :)

or simply nail polish from your wife. works even with ferric chloride. i use it to protect the pivot and tang area when etching folders blades.

And then what? Do ya use acetone to take off the nail polish?

I could see where ya could paint some nice patterns with a small/fine tipped art brush.

I gotta try some experiments and post the results, this could be interestin'.

If anyone else has some thoughts or pics of stuff they tried feel free to add 'em here. :)

yep, paint what you want to stay untouched, etch then remove with what the wife use to remove it or whatever solvant that works and bingo. waaaaaay easier than cutting masking tape with an x acto imho.

just think twice before removing because you wont easily reapply it to the exact same patternif you need a deeper etch, better carefully polish the etched area before removing the nail polish just to be sure you have the desired finish.
